Many college -age people overdo (whether or not they attend college). 80% quit or learn to moderate on their own once they start taking on adult responsibilities.
"One recent study found that 80% of all alcoholics who recover for a year or more do so on their own, some after being unsuccessfully treated. When a group of these self-treated alcoholics was interviewed, 57% said they simply decided that alcohol was bad for them. Twenty-nine percent said health problems, frightening experiences, accidents, or blackouts persuaded them to quit. Others used such phrases as "Things were building up" or "I was sick and tired of it." Support from a husband or wife was important in sustaining the resolution."

Two questions you have to ask yourself:
1) Does he need help now?
2) Does his drinking affect him and you?
I think that your answer to the both questions are "Yes", which is why you are here asking this.
The question is not whether he is an alcoholic or not. He needs help regardless, and he needs to stop before he loses his schoo/job/health/life over drinking. If you don't help you, it will be a matter of time when he gets drunk every night of the week.
If you love him and care about his health and your relationship with him, get him the help.

Only he can determine if he's an alcoholic. Alcoholism is a disease that the sufferer cannot seem to control. Some questions to ask may be (1) Can he stop after a few beers if he wants to? (2) Does just a few beers change his personality? (3) Does he choose drinking over other activities like family get togethers? If drinking is causing problems in his day to day life, he may want to ask himself these questions. Alcoholism leaves people and families broken and destroyed so PLEASE IF YOU LOVE HIM TALK TO HIM ABOUT IT!!!! PLEASE!

The test is can he stop drinking. That will determine if he's an alcoholic, but the signs seem to point that he is an alcoholic.

Yes for sure. He will only stop when he is ready. Usually no one has any influence to their quitting. Find someone else or put up with it. The drinking only gets worse the older they get.

Could be. Could also be "the party phase."
Many outgrow it; Many don't.
Time will tell.
