I think your best bet would be to get a Sandisk Sansa e260 (4.0 Gigs!) - currently the model I have and quite a good one at that.

Pros: Awesome screen (3 x 3.7 cm! HUGE!), video capability, fm radio (with presets), voice recorder (also can be used to record fm radio), and can show pictures too (slideshow option included)! Comes with a LAN and even an extra slot for memory. Good quality headphones too - they should last you a little while. Also has a wheel! Also includes colour display and multiple language capability (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Nederlands and Swedish although no Asian languages), great battery life (it's lithium), 2 volume options (regular or the louder version, which amplifies the regular sound by two). Auto shut off as well (and a clock of course)! You can rate songs (and it has the basic shuffle and repeat sections) along with a Music Equalizer. Very durable unit, I've dropped it more than a few times.

Cons: Scratches easily (and I mean EASY! Do yourself a favour and buy yourself a good case with a screen protector, don't wait. The one it comes with isn't that great..), GEAR wheel (it's actually not that bad - lights up too), the Go-list in your play list section takes a while to load if you've got a lot of music in there, rating songs chews up 5 seconds. The buttons are right next to the gear wheel (which pops up a couple of mm) making them a b**** to reach if you're not used to it. There is the occasional glitch (freezing, a blank pop up window, etc.), but it's not too hard to fix. Weighs 2.7 oz, so it's a bit on the hefty side.

All in all, a great buy. You should definitely consider this - it's about in the $120 range for a 2 Gig, and $150 for a 4 Gig, and $200 for an 8 Gig (all approximate of course)

Hope this helps ya! ... and isn't this in the wrong section?

Creative.
In particular the Zen V Plus. They have a 2 GB, 4 GB (which I have now) and an 8 GB.

i has many features you might find useful like in line recording (you can record from any sound source with this feature), microphone, FM radio with 32 presets, calender, you can save contacts, use as a flash drive etc. And of course you can store and play music.

I have no desire to get a iPod but I heard the Samsung mp3's are good too.
