The main trick is focusing the light at one point. When you put a magnifying glass above the ground, you should see a spot of light on the ground below. Now raise the magnifying glass up and down until that circle becomes a small little dot on the pavement. Also try rotating the glass while you are doing this, because you may not be at the optimum angle to capture the sunlight. You will want to fiddle with focusing the light a little bit. Also make sure the object you want to burn is somewhat flat, at least flat enough for the spot to focus.

it usually has to be a good magnifying glass to work well. It also has to be sunny out. You must position the magnifying glass in a way that the light focuses on a single point.

Get a good glass lens with a 4-inch diameter or so, and move it around near the ground until you see a bright dot form. Position the lens to minimize the size of this dot. Put a leaf at this location, and you should be able to fry it.
