Well rules vary from Dojo to Dojo but in mine if you take more than three months off you have to retest for your rank to keep it. This only last until you have become a full Black Belt. Then you can go on or stay put.
If you go to a new Dojo they for certain will start you off as a white belt and may ALLOW and I say MAY allow you to test for yellow faster than normal or for green. It will all depend on how much you have retained of what you learned and the rules of the Dojo you choose.
so if you liked where you were before, go back and continue your training. Your road back to green will be a lot faster within the same system you were once in.
best of luck

I am not sure how old you are but three months is not a very long time. You should be able to go back into class without much trouble or difficulty. If this is not the case then I think you should sit down and look at if you are actually learning or what I sometimes refer to as "playing at learning karate". There is a difference and a good student with the proper attitude will retain most of his skills and understanding of things longer than three months unless they are fairly young. I mention this not to tear you down but in hopes that you will take a more serious look at your training and your approach to it.
Start stretching, practicing, and reviewing some of your skills, forms, and techniques now so that you will be better prepared once school starts and you resume your training. I have some students that take time off due to the summer or their participation in other sports throughout the year. I encourage them to practice and review a little on their own and that along with their attitude helps keep them better prepared to come back to class. I think if you take a more serious approach to your training in class when you are attending as well as practice and review a little on your own when you take brief breaks like over the summer you will find that you can do it. You will also find that with the proper attitude when you are attending class regularly you will achieve so much more and be a much better student.

I like Shoringurls answer. It isnt really up to you at all, unless your teacher is telling you that you can choose.
I have always believed it is better to be a good white/yellow/orange belt than a sucky green/blue/brown/black belt... so if I were you I would opt for the white belt and rebuild from there.
It would help show your teacher where your priorities lie - with the ability insetad of the silly rope around your waist...

In my school once you have earn your rank you retain it for the rest of your life, so if you leave for 10 yrs then come back you hold the rank you left with, if you gained a higher rank well let you wear no visible ranking for a while until your comfortable enough too, so what i am saying is you have earned that rank so you should stay with it and if you feel you have slipped back abit just ask your teacher for help to get you back on track. If you are starting with a different style you will have to start from scratch.

I was taught, Colors of belts is a new thing to the last hundred years, in the previous 2000 years of martial arts the belt was darker because they didnt wash the belt so over time a white belt turned black.... so what does the color of the belt mean

Rank isn't everything, if you learned good techniques and grew as a person, then return to your old school. If not, then find another. Rank is such an irrelevant thing out of the dojo. The path you follow should be for knowledge.

in taekwondo, you can retain your rank even if you have taken a year of absence as long as you still remember your stances and poomse... i think in karate is pretty much the same as l9ong as you can still remember your katas and stances and puncehs and kicks

Ask the Sensei what rank you merit. Accept, with respect, what you are told.

I don't really get your question. Do you have a choice? I would think that is for your instructor to decide.
