No one, whether there is a family history or not, should go tanning. Besides the risk of cancer it ages your skin. So when you are still looking young and are healthy years from now - they will wish they had listened to you.

You can try handling this several ways. The first trick I would try is to ask them if they have there yearly skin check for skin cancer yet. If they say know then ask them when they plan to schedule it. This may or may not due the trick. Other things you can say is are things like "I prefer not to look old, wrinkly and leathery by doing what you guys are doing". Tell them if they want to ruin there skin that is fine but not to brag about it is bad enough watching them put themselves at such a risk.

If you choose not to smoke but are around people that do, you wind up breathing their smoke anyway. This is tanning. There is no such thing as "second hand exposure to UV rays."

Don't let it bug you. If they want to go tan and talk about it, but you're smart enough to choose not to, it's their problem.

i live with my grandma and all of her brother and sisters have skin cancer. The youngest brother is dieing from it because it got to the brain. And each time somebody says that there head hurt in make her feel bad.And getting to think about it my grandmother might have it to.It makes me just cry if she has it because it would be real bad.try to not let it bother you.

so what is your question?

if you are worried about getting skin cancer because your mother had it, you shouldn't completly loose a social life. tell your friends how it makes you feel...you said only a some of them know...

and only squamous cell carcinoma is caused by sun damage...
