The sun has increased in intensity and is causing a slight increase in Earth's mean temperature. On Mars, too.

Oh, I'm sorry, did you want the Al Gore Version?

WE HAVE TO HAVE ANOTHER BIG TAX INCREASE TO PAY FOR ALL THE CARBON WE ARE PUTTING IN THE AIR.!!! OTHERWISE WE ARE GONNA HAVE SEVERE STORMS AND FLOODING AND THE WINDMILLS IN HOLLAND ARE GONNA BE UNERWATER AND ALL THE WHALES ARE GONNA DIE!!! WE ALL HAVE TO SWITCH TO THOSE LITTLE TIN CAN CARS TO OFFSET THE CARBON PRODUCED BY MY PRIVATE JET!!!

Our planet revolves around the sun and as it does so it moves like a badly balanced spinning top. Sometimes it leans towards the sun, sometimes it leans away from it, sometimes it bounces upwards, sometimes downwards, sometimes it moves closer to the sun, sometimes away. All of these things cause the planet to either warm up or cool down. In addition, the sun itself isn't constant and sometimes it generates more heat than normal and this can cause the world to warm up.

All of these things occur naturally and have always had an effect on the temperature of the planet.

One thing which makes our planet very different from the other ones is that it has an atmosphere. Not only does this mean we can breathe but it also keeps the temperature fairly constant. If there was no atmosphere the planet would be extremely hot during the day and extremely cold during the night - just like on the moon.

One of the important parts of the atmosphere are the greenhouse gases. These include carbon dioxide, methane and other gases and these trap heat a bit like a blanket.

The problem is that a lot of the things we rely on such as burning coal, gas and oil give off greenhouse gases when they're burned. These gases enter the atmosphere and add to the greenhouse gases that are already there. In effect, the blanket which is keeping us warm is getting thicker and thicker so the planet is getting warmer and warmer.

The reference to global warming refers to the fact that at the equator, due to a number of reasons both man made and part of the earth's traditional cycle, has warmed up. The heat coming off that increase cycles through the earth's wind cycles and causes a temperature increase of as much as 12 degrees at the poles.

That increase in temperature is melting the poles. The poles serve to cool down the earth - the air that travels over the poles is cooled down by the ice and travels back around the earth by the winds. Additionally, the sunlight would normally bounce off the ice caps, but is now absorbed by the oceans that are exposed without the ice, which warms up the water further melting the ice.

That is why it's called global warming.

It's unknown what the downstream effect will be, but almost all the scientists agree that the effects can be devestating to the earth include significant climate changes throughout the earth.

Farmland becomes deserts, the oceans rise up and take some coastlines, etc.

A great book to explain it is called Climate Crash and An Inconvenient Truth

Global Warming is the affect here on Earth from humans polluting the Earth. This pollution has caused over 70 billion tons on carbon in to the atmosphere. This warmed the atmosphere and caused an increase of temperature here on Earth.

an increase of the earth's temperature by a few degrees resulting in an increase in the volume of water which contributes to sea-level rise.
