I've lived in this apartment for nearly three years, and I STILL get other people's mail. All I do is I write "not at this address" on the envelope, and I put it back in the mailbox but with a part of it sticking out. The letter carrier always takes them. I'm not going to waste my time making a trip to the mailbox or post office because someone has the wrong address. It happens often, so I'm not going to keep wasting my time with it.

I never throw it away. I return it to the post office or if I am going by a mailbox put it in there after marking it NOT AT THIS ADDRESS. They will forward it. Treat it as you would want someone to treat mail you received there after you had moved.

I am pretty sure it is against the law to throw away someone else's mail.... I could be wrong. But just write "Not at this address" and give it back to the post man the next day.

If it is addressed to an unknown person but the address is correct, i write "no such person at this address" on it and put it back in the mailbox. If it is the wrong address completely, i write "wrong address" on it, circle the address listed, and put it back in the mailbox. If you throw it away, it would be considered tampering with federal mail and that my friend is a crime. Let the post office deal with it.

Writing "not at this address" and leaving it in the box (or putting it in any outgoing mailbox) usually does the trick.

However, with my current house, I've been getting the previous tenants' mail for the past 8 months, and after writing "not at this address" about one hundred times I've just started throwing it away.

If it has your address on it and it was a previous occupier - write on it 'No Longer At This Address and put it back in the post box. If you have never heard of the person, write on it 'Not Known At This Address' and pop it back in the post box. This way it lets the post office know that this mail is unwanted.

I will make an assessment of the mail. Is it junk mail? Is it important mail? If it's important mail, I'll redirect it back to the sender or return it to the post office. If it's junk mail I will throw it away.

If I was busy, I used to write "not at this address" on it, and stick it back into the box. If I had the time, I took it back to the post office.
Now, I have a PO box in post office lobby, so it is not hard to take the letter in to the counter and give it to the person working there.

Had that happen to me repeatedly with tenants that I guess once lived in my apartment, sometimes I would leave it, but I figuring returning it to the mail man would be the more appropriate gesture to make.
