I spoke to my son's (2 1/2 yo) pediatrician about him having flat feet. She said it was normal and that these days doctors don't do anything. To now worry about it, that he should be fine. Supposedly she said that even makes them better when it comes to playing sports. I'm not comfortable with her response, and would like opinions or suggestions. Has anyone gone through this? What did you do?
I remember having flat feet when I was small, but I remember my parents made me wear orthopedic shoes to fix the problem.
Any GOOD help would be greatly appreciated. I don't need criticisms or unwanted mean and rude comments.
Thanks!

It depends upon a couple of things. Is he naturally flat footed or did his arches fall? What kind of shoes does he wear? Natural flat feet are hereditary and not bad. Broken down arches are very bad. Shoes made for people with arches can be painful. Shoes without arches are either cheap, hard to find, or custom made and expensive. There are exceptions. If your son's doctor is not concerned, it is likely that you should not be worried. You can always get a second opinion. There is nothing wrong with that either. Lot's of people go to another doctor for a second opinion. Wishing you well.

I do, and I really shouldn't. I have had flat feet all my life, and it sure made things rough on me in Boot Camp, what with all the marching and standing. Then on the ships, the watch standing, the steel decks, etc. It really got painful at times. But now I am retired, so I enjoy going barefoot at home.

Arches don't usually develop until the third or fourth year of life! Now, if you want to take preventitive steps, have your child walk on uneven surfaces, such as sand or grass barefoot. Also, walking on his tip toes is a good exercise. As for yourself, did your flat feet correct themselves as a child? If not and, you'd like to do something about them, contact me.

If you have observed most children appear to have flat feet , there is a fatty deposit in the arch area that as they mature tends to disappear, I wouldn't worry about it. I have high arches and have spent most of my life bare foot.

I taught preschool not so long ago (maybe 10 years-- ok, I guess that's a while! :) and there was a kid who had special insoles for his shoes for his flat feet.

I'd see a podiatrist and ask their opinion. I don't blame you for having concerns.

i really don't think it's a problem but if you're concerned about it, take him to stride rite shoes. they're a little pricey but they'll have a good shoe with an arch support. ortho shoes are not really necessary.
