i have heard of this operation ...mostly the bone is taken from the hip which in a way is good because its your own....but usualy they tend add metal spacers so that the bone is able to fuse back together around the spine (i no this because my father had a c5 and c6 slip disk operation) but it all depends on the type of injury or condition you have.

This is very debatable and I'd follow your neurosurgeon/orthopod's opinion on the matter. I prefer my own bone in my body but your pelvis will hurt really bad for a while.

Your own bone from the hip. My husband's surgery went great and he has had no problems since. His surgery was in 2002.

Its a lot safer to use your own bone.
