I think cosmetic means to make over or change. I have not looked the word up, I simply say this because of cosmetic surgery and makeup and such.

The word cosmetics comes from the Ancient Greek word 'Kosmos' which translates as 'universe' or 'order' (as in to be in order, not to order eg from a take away...). and 'Kosmeticos' being the subject/art/business/process of putting things into order.

"Cosmetic" is an adjective that means "decorative", "ornamental". It comes from the Greek "kosmètikos" = skilled in adornment, from "kosmein" = to arrange, adorn, from "kosmos" = order.

The noun, that's the one you're referring to, is also "cosmetic", and the plural is "cosmetics", the word also used for "makeup".
