I have 2 dwarf hamsters 2 Syrian Hamsters and 2 Chinese Dwarf hamsters the 2 Chinese dwarf hamsters are by far the sweetest. they sit in my lap and have never bitten me. the Dwarfs started out alright but became mean and bite every time i pick them up. the Syrian hamsters are sweet and clumsy they are fun to watch and hold so it depends on what you like. i would recommend the Chinese or the Syrian hamsters probably female.

Well I know that girl hamsters- any type- are normally the more active animals. This is because in the wild they are supposed to breed and take care of their young. And the men hamsters are just breeders. I know that dwarf hamsters can be pretty easy to handle. Well, I mean some- Russian Hamsters are MEAN. They will bite you and you wont be able to train them otherwise. Funny story, my first day at petsmart I was cleaning out the cages and saw the cutest little hamsters. I reached in only to yank my hand out after being assulted by 10 little Russian Dwarfs. I think personally that the Winter White Dwarfs are the nicest and cutest. Their coat is whiter in winter and browner in summer. So that's kindof a cool thing to witness. They are the size of your hand and soft as a bunny. They are neat to have more than one, because you can see them more active. Now if you are wanting a regular sized hamster, I know that Teddy Bear hamsters and Black Bear hamsters were bread because of their temperment. They are a lot easier to tame and bite less. But I would definetely recommend the winter white dwarfs! You could always go to a petstore and ask to hold a couple of different ones to see which ones you handle best. And just an F.Y.I. incase you didn't know- stick with only one sex. Mixing the two together could cause lots of unwanted babies!

Get a Golden hamster, or a Black Bear hamster. They're not so hyperactive as the little dwarf hamsters are. And I would get a female, because males can tend to stink more, unless that isn't a problem for you. Then it really doesn't matter, there aren't any major personality differences...

I have always loved the teddy bear and black bear hamsters. The dwarf hamsters I have found to be vicious and aren't a good pet to have as a starter. I haven't seen a difference between male and females except for the smell. Females don't smell as much as they don't spray for territory.

Any sex of hamster will do, there isn't much difference in personalities. The only type of hamster I would stay away from would be dwarf hamster, they can be really mean. Teddy Bear hamsters are the sweetest from my experience.

The females tend to be up all nite and more destructive in my experiences with them. The males seem to be content with a clean cage fresh water and food, the females are more active(trying to escape especially at nite so beware)good luck.Teddy bear is a good breed also we had one male almost 3 yrs.If you go to a good pet store they will let you pick what sex you prefer, some stores have them seperated and that can be good.

Well really I would take you teenager to the store and let them decide which is best for them, I have dwarfs and goldens and have experience with teddies. Some say males are more good natured but I have both and well they all have their own personalities and different temperments.
I love em all!!!
Good Luck!!!

Best species i think is Syrian because you can handle them more.
Sex - I think a male, I have had both sexes and find that the male is more cleaner and don't smell like the female
