He was hurt 8 years ago in a Bush race..took time off to recoop..then drove the #1 car for DEI. He had the highest crash rate of any cup driver, and everyone considered him a danger on the tract, but Jr. stood behind him because Steve was the first ever driver hired by his dad for DEI. But when Steve crash into Jr. on the first lap at Pocono race, they released him. Steve also was the first to driver to drive the #8 bush car for JR motorsports besides Jr. But he was also released. He dove for RCR..#30 car for 1 year..then was released for nonperformance. Went to the truck series and drove for Gaughn, but continued to crash..he did win 1 truck race. Steve sometimes pops up in Bush cars, but it will be unlikely he ever gets a full time ride.

Racing is tough for those who don't win or get injured....or, importantly, don't have sponsors who will follow them from team to team. Park was the first driver signed by Dale Sr. for his team, but terrible injuries, a reputation for causing crashes and another tag as being a back-marker has derailed his career.
He has stated that he's home riding his motorcycle and golfing, but has been unable to secure a deal...though he hopes to run in the Busch North series or a modified race.

You're right, he was injured in a on track accident. He returned and tried again but the voice inside his head my have given him the spooks. He does occasionally show up for the truck series.

He was seriously injured in a Busch series crash that damaged his mental function. He was never the same and I guess no one else has hired him.Remember he was the first driver hired by DEI.
