"Your body normally produces a natural form of steroid called cortisol. You will make less cortisol while you're taking steroid medication. This is why you always taper off this medication - so you own body starts making the normal amounts of cortisol again."

Steroids get very involved with bodily functions, and the slower they're weaned off, the better it is. Even short courses of steroids are usually given in tapers, 40 for a week 30 for a week 20 for a week, etc.
