Metals aren't very good protection against modern ammunition.

The extreme pressures and energies generated by a bullet impact cause even the toughest metals to flow like a liquid, and often, the bullet can just shear right through, like a hole punch...... A modern jacketed rifle bullet could easily shear through more than half an inch of stainless or carbon steel plate.

Modern body armor uses a combination of several layers of lightweight, flexible, but extremely tough synthetic cloth, (like "kevlar" or "spectra",) and specially engineered ceramic plates,(typically boron nitride....)

The cloth is able to simultaneously absorb much of the kinetic energy by stretching, and also spreads out the force of the impact over a much larger area, like a trampoline. Ceramic plates can dissipate much of the energy by *fracturing* and splitting in all directions, instead of simply flowing and shearing over a small area like metals.

Unfortunately, this probably isn't practical for the do-it-yourself-er......If you want body armor, it not that hard to buy online.....for a few grand.....

For welding, your options are rather limited. You can weld mild steel, stainless steel, copper, magnesium, and some aluminum alloys.

You'll need thick steel armor to stop a bullet. Probably so thick that you will barely be able to move in the armor.

Alternatively, woven, resin-impregnated Kevlar vests are available. Stretching this material over a thin (1/8-inch) aluminum skin will probably stop most small bullets. You can also wear the material directly, but you will be severely bruised, even if the fabric stops the bullet.

Needless to say, any injury or death that may occur from playing with guns is your own fault.

Light metal isn't going to be bullet proof...not from a high powered full metal jacket bullet. Steel works but is heavy...

No metal is bullet proof. Certainly not light enough for you to be able to wear. That's why they have fabrics and ceramics.

Metal is not effective for bulletproof armor.Kevlar is your best shot, and its a synthetic element.
