Since you are in your 40s, I would say that your physical considerations would be the most important.
Not that 40 is old but you are less likely to benefit from a ton of shin smashing (Muay Thai, etc), or throwing 200 pounds over your shoulders and back (Judo), etc.
So, a big part of it will be your fitness level (cardio, flexibility, pre-existing conditions, etc). Part of it will also be attitude. An aikido class with a ton of kids may or may not (by your post, probably wouldnt) suit your desires. A group of reckless young university students who typically heal in what seems like 5 minutes will also probably cause more damage to you than it would benefit you...
And then you need to decide if the teacher really does know their stuff or is just a flake in pajamas (regardless of the style).
So, without saying any particular style, I would just say, go out and see what is available to you. The name wont matter much...

It depends on what you're looking for. Karate and other kicking arts can be good, but you have to check out the school and see if they teach solid fighting and self defense, or just junk. There are plenty of both. That goes for just about all arts, actually. What you really need to do is look at your natural strengths and weaknesses, and find a style that works to your strengths, while covering your weaknesses, then go and find an effective teacher of that style. Wish I could tell u something more conclusive!

I'd just do something that you enjoy and keeps you fit. Even Yoga. As far as training goes, if you want to be street wise, go boxing. You dont have to get into the ring, the training will be enough. Martial arts on the street dont really work when the chips are down. If your rolling around in the gutter with some drunken yob all the practice will just go out the window. I studied Karate for 12 years and it only really works when you are sparring with an opponent who is also using Karate. Boxing is brutal, it'll help you develop a killer instinct.

My vote goes to jiujutsu. You really want a martial art that you will improve at, even though you are at an age where you are declining physically. Other choices would be Ninjutsu, Aikido, Kali/Escrima/Arnis, Wing Chun, and some other Kung Fu styles. Karate, TKD, Muay Thai are all great arts, but it will be very disheartening to watch the 20-somethings progress so much faster than you.

Wing Chun is a no frills fighting art. Others would be Shuai Jiao, Pencak Silat, Combat Hapkido. I just saw a tv show called Human Weapon, that featured Filipino arts and I was very impressed. They definitely took a no nonsense approach to fighting, so you may want to check them out.

I found personally that Tae Kwon Do is very good for forming a foundation of martial arts. This will make is easier if you choose to proceed to more in-depth martial arts like Karate or Kung-fu. It will be VERY difficult to start off in Okinowan karate or Kung-fu without any basis of stances, etc. Just my opinion. Start simple. I would also even suggest just a kickboxing class over everything if you are just wanting to be able to defend yourself in a street fight situation. Good luck & best wishes!! :)

Several good styles would work for you, finding the teacher to teach you may be the harder of the two.
See what you have in your area. The arts already mentioned by people here are all good. It is just a matter of finding a teacher that best suits your needs which i think will be harder to do unless you can travel.
best of luck searching.

Colin,
Look into Systema. It's a Russian method used by Spetsnaz operators, and now many of our US operators. No uniforms, archaic etiquette, or anachronistic forms. Most people involved with it are military, intelligence, or law enforcement personnel. It strongly emphasizes natural flow, natural health, and heightened sensory and extrasensory perception. Check my website for a link and some pictures: www.murakumodojo.org
30 years martial arts with loads of "real" life experience on the street and in operations.

Karate - Simple, effective and beautiful!!!
Type E.C.K.A into your browser and you'll find a few decent schools near you.
Beware the others that call themselves "tiger foo dragon combat" or some other laughable expression. You'll be walking straight into a McDojo!
