In all sorts of cultures this has been true. The number and variety of gods that the peoples of the world have invented is astounding. It seems to be something in human nature that wants reassurance and feels that a god, any god, can give it.

The great French philosopher Voltaire predicted the destruction of Christianity within his lifetime... 50 years later, his house was being used to manufacture Bibles...

Voltaire was an atheist.....he said the Bible would be
obsolete in 100 years. One hundred years after his death
his home was owned by the A Bible Society and printed the very book he said would be obsolete. God has a sense of humor, I'd say.

I think of the guy that claimed he would wipe out Christianity before he died. He died really really pissed off, very frightened with lots of anxiety and he probably continues with weeping and gnashing his teeth. When Voltair and a christian were invited to the king's castle to have a debate, after Voltaire's lengthy babbling, the christian said one word, "The Jew". The Jewish people are proof of God. A tiny nation has lasted thousands of years with a distincty language and culture while countless others have risen and fallen. God's promises endure while the traditions of men fall.

well, it all comes down to your stand point.

I, myself, believe in God.

Therefore, I think there is a reason people make gods and idols.

There is something in us that cries to to worship the one true Creator in this world, and to have a relationship with Him. Not doing so leaves us feeling empty. So, if they have not heard of Christ, they turn to man made images, or turn to other worldly things (IE money and other worldly possessions).

So yes, I believe that people deem it necessary to invent" their own gods.

That's my take on it. If you want to know more, e-mail me. I didn't want to give you a 25 sent answer for a 5 cent question, even more so then I might have already =)

isn't g-d something man has to come to understand on his own? Nobody can be convinced of G-d through anything but intellect. So in truth, everyone of us must invent him to believe in Him. Otherwise we do not believe in Him. For after all the fact that somebody else already knows of Him does not convince us of his existence, so in effect each of us invents him when we agree that He exists. His statement is a redundancy

That's an interesting quote but I don't think it's true. If there were no God there would be at least these two options:

We wouldn't exist anyway so it's a null question

OR

Since one of the ultimate goals in life should be the search for and aquisition of truth, if God didn't exist we shouldn'tinvent truth for any reason. It just doesn't make sense. That's the road of ignorance and it stops the progression of humanity in general.

It's sure a good thing He exists and we can know it for sure...

I agree with him.

i believe it means, if there werent something of a higher power to believe in, people would be lost. They would never move forward because they would feel like they werent moving toward anything greater. So for the sake of progress, it would be necessary to invent a higher power to believe in.
