I work at my local sheriffs office as a student assistant and due to possible budget cuts i may be getting laid off some time in the next month is there any thing we(the students) can do to sway the decision of our county commissioners to give our sherrifs office more money so no one will have to lose their jobs?

IF your county commissioners were elected, than the obvious thing to do would be to call them and write them and let them know your feelings. The only time most politicians feel the need to listen to their constituents is at election time. Unfortunately government positions are paid out of the tax rolls. Most people will take the lower taxes over paying a student assistant. I wholly disagree with quitenewhere that there is barely enough money to go around. Government agencies are notorious for their frivolous spending. There are not too many government budgets out there that couldn't be cut by making some common sense decisions.

Sorry to hear about budget cuts, and your looming layoff if it happens.
Many of us who work in government jobs are in the same boat, and those of us who work in the private sector have a different explanation for any looming layoffs.

Your initial question was "Where has all the money gone?", It all comes from taxation. When the money gets doled out, it never fails that there is hardly enough to go around. Ask to be on a coop program with school. It can be a way of dealing with the fnancial side of it.
