I am going to get a small/medium sized tattoo on my lower back. I'm new to tattoos so I don't really know how much a good tattoo should cost. So how much?

I know that different places will charge different amounts and details, color, size also play a part, but I'm asking overall. I don't want to be shocked by a price or wondering if my tattoo artist isn't as pro as I thought because it's too cheap.

Thanks for any help.

For a tattoo that size probably $50-$150. What part of the country you get your tattoo done is also going to have an effect. A shop in a big city will probably be more expensive that in a suburb. Ask if the artist has pictures of some of the work they've done in the past, this can help to see if you like their style. Also dont be afraid to have them draw the tattoo out on paper multiple times until they get it just right. Good luck!!

some artists charge by the hour (mine does) and some charge by the size and detail of the tattoo. i have never had an artist charge a different price for a color or black tattoo. i'm not sure what small/medium is to you but i have what i would consider to be two small tattoos and they have both cost $200 to $250. the best way to get a feel for price is to look at portfolios and ask how an artist charges.
good luck!

MY last tattoo cost me 95 dollars and that was 1 year ago. It took the artist approx. 30minutes to do it.
My Nieces cost 160 dollars and hers was on her lower back. It is probably a medium sized one.. Different tattoo studios do charge different prices.

As for pricing, your best bet would be to offer, not ask, believe it or not. Go into a shop and make a reasonable offer, and you may get it; another good tip is to not go alone; the shop and artists are interested in the work itself, but moreover they are interested in the money in your wallet. If you go into a place knowing the piece you would like (upwards of $150-300 for a backpiece) and have, say, $200 on you and a friend that would like a tattoo as well, you may get it. As for pricing on a single, go-in-alone-and-ask piece, it could be astronomical depending on the artists ego. Check their portfolio out to see if the price they're quoating you matches the type of work you're looking for, and if so, work it out with them. Good luck getting your piece done.

You are looking at 70 to 100 dollars. Like you said different places charge more or less. Don't forget to add in the tip.

At least $150 an hour. Anyone that charges less than that does not have confidence in their work - and neither should you. The only way to get good ink cheap is if you are getting it from a friend who is a pro - and that don't happen too often. Good luck.

in my country the measure of tattoo-size is a cigarette-pack. max price for tattoo which has size in one cigarette-pack is 1000$ but usually the price for good tattoo is just about 200 - 300$
