The first few hours were okay, but once I got to sleep some the pain came when I woke up. Not all of them hurt just the lower left. I'm not really sure how bad the swelling is. Also, my throat hurts like hell when I swallow.
I had tears come out of my eyes b/c I couldn't drink anything without huge pain both in my extraction point and throat. I just took some pain meds and I think it's working b/c I can bear the pain now. Is this normal? How do you know if you have a dry socket?

A dry socket is a bone infection after a recent extraction, 3-4 days. It is characterized by extreme pain near the extraction site.

I think that is just the novocain and/or anesthesia wearing off if it's only been a few hours. Dry sockets don't start to hurt until a couple of days after the surgery, and believe me, that is a pain you wouldn't be able to bear with a truckload of Vicodin even!!! Your throat probably hurts because it got dried out when they had to keep your mouth open for the whole oral surgery. If the pain pills are helping, keep popping them, that's what they're for. If the pain gets so unbearable that the pills no longer help, call your dentist. He/she will make sure nothing's going horribly wrong, but the bad news is that if dry sockets develop, there's really nothing you can do about it until they heal over, which takes about 5 days. They can pack it with this vile-tasting medicated gauze, but don't do that unless you feel like throwing up every hour from the taste. In the meantime, just keep ice packs on both your cheeks and try to sleep. Good luck to you.

I got a dry socket after having my wisdom teeth removed. It hurts alot and there's nothing they can do about it. I don't support taking alot of pain meds, but for at least the first 24 hrs after your surgery, take the pain meds every 6 hrs or however often they're prescribed. Your pain should start to subside by tomorrow. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Depending on if your wisdom teeth were fully grown in or not could be the answer. Or oral surgeon may have very well needed to cut some of the tissue in your mouth. In your jaw are hundreds of nerves running through. If it was a large enough root on your wisdom teeth, that could play a big factor as to why it is so painful for you.
If it is as painful as you say, take your medication. Remember to take your next pill before you start having pain again. If it says to take your medicine every 4-6 hours, I suggest every 4 hours. You won't be a happy camper if you are in pain.
Definately try to avoid getting anything in your open sores, that will cause even more pain.

if it does not get better in 5 days, then you probly have it. give it some time tho first ok
