I think being "unable to go for one day" without it is the very definition of dependence....you're depending on the substance on a daily basis. The severity of the dependence, I suppose, would be determined by what happens in the event you HAVE to go without for one day. If you just feel a little off, but otherwise have no visible effects, it's probably ok. But if you kick the dog, beat your wife and go rob a liquor store, you just might have a problem.

No not at all, in fact there are those who used to be prescribed having a drink a day, Guinness is an example of this as it is iron rich that cannot be fully digested by the system. So anaemics a pint a day can be good for you.
It is when your body relies on it to function properly, then you are a dependant. Being dependent is mind over matter, and one unit a day is not a bad thing, and can help alleviate stress; but again abusing it, is a line the person has to draw for themselves, not one that is imposed.
Enjoy alcohol, do not abuse it and like everything, done in moderation it can help your psyche.

Everyone is busy talking about alcoholism & dependancy over what? ONE pint of guinness!
Yes, alcohol is addictive, if abused it destroys lives, there's no doubt about that. But lets keep this in perspective here.
If someone were to be drinking (alcohol) over the reccomended units each day, then it's a habit that needs to be addressed.....the same as eating through 5 bars of chocolate a day would need to be.....because it becomes unhealthy.....it would actually be having a detrimental affect not only on the one over indulging but on those around them as well......the only real difference being that alcohol has an immediate effect.....eating too many empty calories would take a lot longer to have a negative effect.
It would only be an addiction if the one (needing) it were to suffer withdrawel symtoms if they couldn't get it.
There are many people that have out of habit drank too much alcohol at certain times in their lives......they've also got the habit under control, cutting down the amount they may have gotten through before. Doesn't mean they were ever alcoholics or addicted.
In the same breath, there are those that haven't been able to get their alcohol consumption under control, even going to the point of being in denial about the amount consumed, hiding bottles around the house in order to not get found out. That's an addiction & it's an addiction because they will have withdrawel symptoms when they attempt to cut it down or out.
Sorry hun, your husbands right, a habit is very different from an addiction.....one you don't want to be without, the other you can't.

you cant categorize addiction, much like you cant say 'i shoot up every day but only once so i'm not dependent' its all abuse even if its one drink that is had every day. if you cant go a day without a drink then you are an alcoholic. period.
the real question is - does the one drink every day interfere with your life or how others view you? a counselor once told me: "if somebody close to you has a problem with something you are doing, then it probably is a problem and you should re-evaluate your behavior" i know plenty of 'functional' alcoholics who dont think they have a problem with alcohol because they still go to work every day and have a 'happy' family. the truth of the matter is, that may be, but they are dependent none the less. however, if somebody isnt willing to admit to alcoholism, there is little you can do to help them until they are ready.

One pint of Guinness equals TWO units of alcohol, not one. If I were to go without a drink for a day, there would be a grave danger of sobriety setting in. I tried sobering up once, it was the worst 15 minutes of my life.........Never again

I think a hell of a lot of alcohol abuse depends on stress levels. This does not apply to drunken louts who have no real reason to be stressed but are probably alcohol dependent.
I had a stressful job with a pig of a boss and there was a time when I used to pour a drink when I got home before I even took my coat off.
I realised I was staring into the abyss so went sick, reported my boss, got a new one and the problem resolved itself.

1 pint of guinness is more than 1 unit , it's 2.3 units . however it is within uk goverment guidelines as the weekly total would be 16. i would not consider this dependant i drink 50 units a week on average and run a sucessful buisness.

Well Rev its like this. Yes I enjoy a pint and a glass of beer. As am amateur Wine and Beer Judge at National level I do tend to spit everything out when tasting - simply because I have to drive home. But your question has made me think again - when I am at home - do not have to drive, I enjoy a few beers or a bottle of wine. Trouble is that if I have got it in the house i will drink it - and as far as I am concerned that makes me an alcoholic - in our village there is an AA that meets on a Sunday - could I really stand up and say 'I'm an Alcoholic' - how do you measure such things? EM me with your thoughts please
