Ah, I've heard this type of problem a lot. See, the pet sees other animals and habitats, plus hunting, foraging, potential meals and other animal-like things. Because of this, your cat is very alert. She sees things that, as a forest-cat, she would eat or things she would do. Everything looks small on the TV, so she might even see a polar bear as prey. Like a wild cat, your cat will stay alert because she wants to pounce. However, the TV animals move too fast so she doesn't get a chance to 'hunt.'
It's a Catch 22. If your cat eats plenty of food, she doesn't need to hunt at all. But, your cat needs to hunt before she can eat, right? And so, if a cat sees prey, she'll try to pounce on and/or kill it for food. Nifty, eh?
However, if your cat can somehow curb her hunger, she has no reason to hunt, so she doesn't look for prey. It's that simple. If you can break out of that Catch 22, you won't need to feel guilty if you do it the right way.
I think that in your case, you should let the cat watch some Animal Planet. Perhaps put her food bowl there for a while and let her watch TV. This way, she satisfies her hunting instincts by eating, so she has no need to hunt. When her food is finished, try to take her to another room and play with her or something. This way, her instincts and curbed and so is her hunger, so you have more time to love and play with her. It's a win-win situation.
Hope this helps. Thanks for reading.

Well, short of giving up the remote to your cat (you've got a girlfriend for that, right?), you should do what I do. While I am away at work, I leave Animal Planet on for my cats. Actually, today I turned it to Discovery Channel because it is shark week and under the sea shows are their favorite programs. They sit right in front of the tv and stare. You should see them when I come home. They have obviously been playing, too, by the mess of mousies all over.... but they are laying in front of the tv each with a paw on the screen. They hate commercials, though.....

I have to leave the TV on when I leave the house or my cats spazz. They don't watch the animal channel; they just like the voices of other humans. I would guess it's the noises the other animals make that attracts her attention. But I'd still watch my channels when I'm home, whether she likes it or not! Just leave the TV on the animal channel when you go out.

Obviously, your cat needs her own TV...
Seriously - mine do the same. They love watching nature shows on TV. Shark Week at my house is a laugh riot!! All those fish on TV, my cats go nuts!!!!
I leave the TV on during the day when Im at work for them. Then, when I get home, I tell them its my turn to watch TV... They learn how to share...

Cats love to watch other animals. Make her a perch by the window and open the blinds/curtains for her so she can see the other animals outside. Feed the birds and squirrels outside the window for her to see. Get her animal play toys, like stuffed mice and lizards. Put up animal pictures on the walls for her. (I tear cat pictures out of magazines and tape them on the walls near the floor for my cat). Get her her own TV and VCR, and tape animal shows for her to watch.

The name of the cat dvd is Video Catnip. Lots of great shots of mice, fish, and birds. Leave it on for her during the day while you're not around. At night, you kids will just have to share...
