Find a few friends to move in with and split the rent. that way, you will have your freedome, and look for scholorships and grants.

My parents are the same way. I only lived with them for a month in between apartments ( i moved out at 15 ) and they drove me nuts. At the time I was 19 had a stable career in the mortgage industry, responsible and my parents would still yell at me lecture me whatever as soon as I came home from being out. My mother would lose sleep over it waiting up for me all hours of the night and my dad harassing my dates! I finally had to scramble and bail. I found a roommate thankfully and flew the coop a.s.a.p. My two younger sisters still live at home 21 and 25 and my parents still try to give them a curfew. $400 a month is a pretty reasonable price to split with a roommate or look into rooms for rent or studios with utilities included. It's not fair but the reality is your parents call the shots and even if you pay rent that doesn't stop them from being parents, controlling but still your parents. I'm sure it's hard because you are now legal and they know it but they are just trying to hold onto you however possible. I say save your relationship with your parents and try to get out because you may end up having more problems if they don't decide to budge. Good luck.

p.s

my sisters complain daily about my parents but they are still there. Those girls are nuts!

Mothers are going to be mothers.

If you are not the primary lease holder/homeowner, then whatever she says goes because you are on her property. You are impinging on her freedom by being there and it is fair that you pull you weight.

Although 18 makes you an adult (at least legally) you chose to stay in a not-so-adult situation by deciding to stay with mum.

So you have to decide: do you want to save a few bucks or do you want your true emancipation?

Her leaving you when you were 9 is sad, but irrelevant at this point; you are living in the present. Legally she can drop kick you out the house.

If this situation really bothers you, save your pennies and move out.

you could probably afford to live on your own, if you had a roommate.

if you do decide to get a roommate, make sure you and your roommate have separate leases with the landlord, so that if he or she doesn't pay her part, YOU won't be liable.

your mother has you under her thumb, i guess. maybe she doesn't want to "let go" yet.

i think you're old enough to do whatever it is you like with your life. you're 18 years old, paying rent...

take care.

400 seems a little steep to pay your parents. They should be helping you save so you can move out. Cut it back to $200 a month and save the other 200 in the bank. Tell them theyre being unreasonable. They are in a way keeping you prisoner.

Honor your Mother and Father.

But you also need to address the issues from when she left you at 9 years old.

Ask her if you and her can have a long talk over dinner sometime.
