2 big 120 pound dogs? Or just any dogs?

My son is a deputy. They tell people the biggest crime prevention that anyone can do is get a big loud dog. Works better than any security system.

Now, honestly, my big dog would run and hide. It's the three and five pound white ones they would have to worry about. All the rest would just invite them in and want petted.

I read an article written buy a burglar turned security consultant that said dogs don't usually bother them if they are going into an empty house. He said the neighbors are probably used to the barking dogs. A pound of hamburger will take care of the dogs. He said the biggest deterrent was one of those signs in the front yard that said "Protected By XYZ Alarm".
Now from my experience. I have been robbed a few times in my life. Recently I have been robbed twice and I have a Pit Bull. She is not trained to be a killer so she was easy to get around. In the past I was robbed when I had a 145 pound dog, again not trained to be aggressive.
If you want your dogs to not let anyone in, barking will not work, you will have to make "Junk Yard Dogs" out of them that are very aggressive to people.
Get an alarm system if you are really worried.

It's a deterrent for some criminals, but that ones that have scouted out the places usually can use some kind of trick to stop the dogs. Some robbers will get dog training so they can easily control a dog, or they will have dog treats and use them to just lock a dog in a room. Also, how many dogs will bark for just a little bit but are easy to calm down when you pet them?

They can help with security but they aren't great for your only line of defense.

I have little dogs. They are about 10 lbs each. I think large dogs may seem a litte more ferocious, but really I think any dog will do as long as they bark. My theory is that the barking draws attention to the fact that something is not right. Killers and robbers don't want to call attention to themselves, so a barking dog is likely to send them away.

If they are smart they won't. A security expert commented that if the family that was recently slain in Connecticut, i think it was, would have had a dog they probably would be alive to day. I have a 40 pond beagle and he scares even the door to door sales people away. I don' think the size of the barking dog really matters. Some small dog breeds used to be keep at palace pets to alert the habitat ants and larger guard dogs of an intruders presence.

I recently had a break in, and I own a toy poodle and a pug. This person still went in the house with barking dogs. However, i think if you have a very large loud barking dog, people would be less likely to breaking in.

Stupid robbers might.. Otherwise.. It would go against what a robber does.. They want things quiet, they don't want everyone looking to see why the dog is barking.. They are going to choose the house w/o a barking dog.

There was a news special that aired from a prison. They asked prisoners that same ?. They all said that alarm systems and etc; did not slow them down but if they heard more than one dog bark they would pass that house up. It was not worth the trouble.

Usually, they will pass by a house with a "Beware Of Dog" sign, or, yes, a barking dog. But, if there is a dog that isn't barking, and is just small, then, they might go into house. I am not exacetly sure. Thanks,

Not normally. Even a small barking dog is normally enough to deter intruders, they like to do their thing in silence.

You get the odd psycho, but in that case you need more than a dog to stop them.
