For about a 2 weeks a VERY thin cat that is nery obviously not neutered has been roaming around my neighborhood. Well I called the local animal shelter and they haven't been able to catch him, so I put some food and water outside for him. For the past 3 or 4 days I have seen him in my backyard, but when I go outside he runs off. Well the day before yesterday I was outside and he came up to me and he is really very friendly. I decided last night I want to keep him (if I can), but I am afraid when I take him in there will be thousands of dollars of work to be done on him... Please help I really want to give him a good home, but I don't want to spend anymore than 300-400 dollars on getting him back to health.. :(

I have already bought him a litter box (in hopes i can keep him) and some toys and friskies food (wet and dry) Are you sure I should wait until he is heavier to take him in? Do you think it would be smart to see if he will sleep inside tonight or just buy him some sort of carrier so he can have shelter outside?

My dog also seems to like him. He watched me through the door and when I let him out he went looking for him and smelled where he went over the fence and started whining.

You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on him, but you do need to take him to the vet to find out what the state of his health is.
The office visit will probably be less than $50.00. You can tell the vet that your money is limited and how much you can spend, and he can help you decide what should be done for the cat, what is the most important, and what can wait. You may be able to spread out the needed vet care over weeks, possibly months, or you may be able to make payment arrangements. You just have to be up front with the vet .
The cat will probably need flea and ear mite treatment and deworming at the first visit. All of that shouldn't come to over another $50.00.
Don't use flea or ear mite remedies you can buy at the pet store or grocery store or any home remedies. They don't work and they can harm or even kill the cat. Flea collars harm the cat more than the fleas. The vet has flea treatments that actually work, won't hurt the cat, and are not expensive.
This cat is homeless through no fault of his own. It seems he used to be a pet, and taking him in and helping him is a really kind thing to do.

Don't try to do anything except feed, water & pet untill he fattens up (& trusts you a whole lot more) Then you can make an appointment at the vet's. If you can, try to give him a bath before going to the vet's. Once he has some weight on him, the vet can more easily determine what other care he needs...such as shots, neutering etc. Almost for sure he needs to be de-wormed but follow the vet's advice on this. Over the counter stuff could make him very ill (I know because I've been there & done that). ....He also needs a warm, dry place to sleep. Do not ever give a pet stuff like yarn or string etc. If they swallow it, it strangulates their bowells & they die. Do pick up some simple cat toys for him though & be sure to play with him. Good luck with your new friend...cats are great companions & you usually don't have to housetrain them, just show 'em the litterbox.

It wont be thousands of dollars ...actually you can have the vet run the feline leukemia test and there are a couple of other ones and then just get him his shots...usually animal shelters will do all of this and neutering for cheap ...thanks for taking a stray off the streets you are a good soul
ps...dont forget flea control since the cat has been outside you dont want him to bring fleas to your dog

It shouldn't cost that much,
Take him to the vet and get him a good check up,
get his shots, a good wormier, and a good flea protection and make a appointment for him to be fixed
Buy a good food on with lots of protein, and vitamins probably a kitten food and everything should be ok.
Thank you for taking him in and giving him a life he wouldn't have had a chance in the shelter there are to many cats there already.

So what's the question? If you want to keep him, all he needs is to be neutered, given a few shots, a check-up, and cat food, a litter box, etc. I don't think it should be any more than $400.

Sometimes it is hard to bring an outside cat inside...but if he is really friendly with you..it is worth the try...and ya know...the initial exam won't be that much...go ahead and take to vet and get checked out..I have found outside cats are often very skinny...take to vet...and then food and lots of love..I bet you will have a fantastic companion!!!

Most likely he just needs a few meals and de-bugging (fleas and worms). A new cat check up should be less than $100, including vaccinations. The vet will tell you if there's more than that wrong with him, then you can decide.

He will need to be neutered and have his vaccinations all of that shouldn't cost more than you are willing to spend.
Ask the VET to check him over really good - he could already be past saving

Take him to a vet and explain the situation. Most vet bills aren't more than $400.00, I have 4 dogs I have rescued and normally they just need shots and worming.
