"If I do not want what you want, please try not to tell me that my want is wrong.

Or if I believe other than you, at least pause before you correct my view.

Or if my emotion is less than yours, or more, given the same circumstances, try not to ask me to feel more strongly or weakly.

Or yet if I act, or fail to act, in the manner of your design for action, let me be.

I do not, for the moment at least, ask you to understand me. That will come only when you are willing to give up changing me into a copy of you.

I may be your spouse, your parent, your offspring, your friend, or your colleague. If you will allow me any of my own wants, or emotions, or beliefs, or actions, then you open yourself, so that some day these ways of mine might not seem so wrong, and might finally appear to you as right -- for me. To put up with me is the first step to understanding me. Not that you embrace my ways as right for you, but that you are no longer irritated or disappointed with me for my seeming waywardness. And in understanding me you might come to prize my differences from you, and, far from seeking to change me, preserve and even nurture those differences." Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. —Henry David Thoreau

I think religious folks persistently pick on atheists because free-thinkers represent a threat to people who prefer to have their thinking done for them.

Most Christians are church members. This means their beliefs have been examined and found acceptable by a membership committee. Like yacht clubs and country clubs, the main privilege of membership is that the unruly riff-raff is kept at bay. Any fool would feel comfortable in the company of others who have been carefully selected to all share the same values. This, however, is not how the real world works. The real measure of a worldly person's mettle is how they get along with those whose values are significantly different than their own. Christians generally fail this test because church membership breeds a self-righteous intolerance of non-believers. Always has, always will.

in the event that they are talking for themselves, what are they asserting? seem at each and every of diverse religions there. that doesn't argue for something different then the certainty that many human beings prefer to have a non secular organisation they are allied with. Your numbers do no longer take into approximately people who % out with a definite faith yet who're no longer universal attendees at centers, or who're despite they declare to be in call basically and for social motives basically, no longer non secular ones. It additionally does not think approximately lots of people who decide directly to no longer be pointed out as atheist or agnostic by using social disadvantages in contact in specific circumstances. at a similar time as exciting, those numbers are pointless in any form of dialogue relating to the certainty of deity.

Because reason scares them. Their religion discourages reasoning, especially reasoning aimed at religious superstitions. It upsets the emotional indoctrination they've received.
