Well it sounds kind of like a meow only it sounds like he's saying "wuh wuh wuh" or something. I find it kind of useful because at least I know he's about to puke, right? But is something wrong with him?

It sounds like a hairball. Its getting serious if he is barfing up his food because the hairball is preventing it from being digested in his stomach. Its time to call your vet and ask them what kind of remedies they suggest for hairballs.

The cat is coughing up a hairball by your description. There are special foods and medications at the pet shop for the condition. Comb your cat regularly if it'll let you. The good thing is hairballs are not fatal, just gross.

It means his stomache is bothering him. It's like that nooise people make right before they barf, kinda, except it's a cat noise. My cat doesn't do that, though, and anyway, she's an outdoor cat.

Nothing's wrong.
Most likely he's hacking up a fur ball.
A fur ball is a accumulation of fur that gets clogged in their stomache from licking themselves.
No need to worry, its normal for cats to hack up fur balls (theyre usually gray and slimy).
If you want to cut down on this you could buy special "fur ball control" formula of cat food which helps break down the fur in the stomach.
Brushing his fur also helps a lot to cut down on what he'll end up licking later.

no, cats puke for various reasons. The noise is just a reaction to the discomfort they are feeling before it comes up. Mine will howl and then he starts this gross gulping sound before he throws up chewed food, I think he eats too much at one time.

This is just the dry heaves they do before throwing up. My kitty does the same when she's got nasty hairballs. Blegh.
