Get her fixed. It costs a little more when she is in heat, but it saves you in the long run.
If you are just trying to find out how to avoid the mess, go to the pet store and buy her some prissy pants. They are basically doggie panties that you put a liner in. They are relatively cheap, but you can run through a lot of liners if you are changing them regularly. (Which you should.)

I agree with DP. Unless you are planning on running a breeding program, there is no reason to keep her intact and you can reduce the chance of health problems by spaying her. In the meantime, you can go to a Pet Supply store and buy doggie "diapers" that will keep her from getting blood on your furniture or anywhere else in the house. They work pretty well and have them for just about every size dog. And definitely keep her inside except for quick potty breaks so male dogs will not be able to get to her. Hope that helps!

i would keep a good eye on her. make sure she can't get out and no male dogs can get in to your yard or house. my terrier is in heat and she keeps trying to go to the neighbors house where there's a male lab. if she is an inside dog they have doggie panties... i would just keep the dog outside that's what i do until she's done.

Two suggestions, you pick the most appropriate.
1: Keep her away from intact male dogs, and don't get caught off guard at how clever they can be at trying to get by your efforts.
2: Move her into a cooler area.

Yes, get her fixed and you'll never have to deal with this again. In the meantime, she CANNOT be outside loose or by herself, even if yourr yard is fenced- males go to great lengths to get to a female in heat. if a large enough male mates with her, she could be killed when birthing time comes or you'll have to pay $1k+ for a csection.

crate her - walk her on lead away from all dogs when outside
Get her spayed when she come out of heat. It may save her life. Much less chance of cancer and many health problems...not to mention the messiness of it all anyway - in your house.....
