NO.. They are not the same breed of dog at all.. Goldens breed with Goldens and Labradors breed with Labradors.. There is no other possible combination.

Edit : Laugh all you want.. Breeds should be bred within their own breed. We do NOT want any more mutts bred.. They are filling up the shelters.. People are taking advantage of puppy buyers with their so called designer breeds.. Pets should be spayed and neutered.. We all know how mutts get here DUH... IRRESPONSIBLE people who don't get their PETS spayed/neutered...

Oh dear you've opened up a can of worms with this one! I've read the other answers and i cannot believe how nasty some people have been to you. This site is not about venting your spleen on issues that upset you, its about helping people who need our advice! Therefore, I will help you. Yes of course you can mate these two breeds together if thats what you wish to do, they're your dogs after all, i presume. From reading the other answers i gather that you are american or that the people who answered your question are? It sounds as if they are angry at you for trying to breed more ' mutts '? Are not all dogs beautiful? Do they have to be a ' pedigree ' to afford some love and attention? If you pay 100 dollars / pounds for your dog, does that mean that it is less loved and cared for than a dog that cost 500 dollars / pounds? I dont think so. And before everyone jumps on my back i live in england and we too have a stray dog problem that needs addressing but perhaps this person has homes for his pups, did anyone think to ask? No they didn't. If you are not worried about having a ' pedigree ' litter and can find good homes for them then go ahead and breed. Good luck to you.

Yes it's prefectly fine althought the result will not be a pure breed and therefore not pedigree standard. However a lab x golden could be very appealign because they are a similar breed to each other and it's a known fact that "mutts" live longer healthier live than pedigrees.

No it isn't. What would be the point? The only valid reason for mating 2 dogs is to, hopefully, improve on the parents. There are already far too many Labradors & Goldens being bred - 40,000 Labradors in the UK alone in one year. The world certainly doesn't need any more, especially crossbreeds. Both breeds have plenty of hereditary conditions - hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, a number of eye conditions, so to breed responsibly you would have to have the relevent health checks done - that would cost over £500. before you even start to consider other expenses.
Chalice - how sad that a vet nurse doesn't know the difference between inbreeding & selective breeding & doesn't know that inbreeding also has benefits - when done by knowledgeable breeders. Responsible breeders who are genuinely trying to better the breed always test for hereditary conditions before breeding - how many "mutt" breeders do that? Or are you saying that "Mutts" never have health problems?

Physically yes you can, but as to whether you SHOULD - no. As people have said, there are enough unwanted animals out there without you taking up more needed homes by making more puppies. It doesn't matter if they're pure or 'mutts', dogs are dogs when it comes to shelters.

I think a lot of the people on here are missing the point here - all this 'no you shouldn't make mutts, you should try to better the breed' - better the breed?! What a joke, it's all this inbreeding to maintain the 'purity' of a line that has resulted in so many inherant breed health problems! Look at bulldogs - they're so darn 'pure' they can't even give birth naturally!

Health-wise there is no reason on Earth two dogs of different breeds can't be mated (especially breeds of the same size!!) - but there are plenty of other good reasons why NOT to breed any dogs at all in the current climate.

size of dogs would not cause a problem for the female dog, but just because they are both pedigree, pups would be a cross! Not the reasons to breed from them, as you are not improving the line of breed

THe only thing wrong with mutts is that there are waaaayyyy too many of them in this country as is. No one is saying mutts are worthless creatures, but given the rate of euthanasia and now death in gas chambers for dogs and cats, contributing to the overpopulation of pets in this country should not be ANYONE's goal.

While you aren't going to be creating devil dogs or mutant puppies with two different heads, the responsible answer to your question is simply no. It's not ok. It's not ok to make more mutts that will most likely end up in a shelter. It's not ok to make more puppies when there are so many that need to be adopted right now in shelters in this country. It's not ok because every puppy that is bred is a death sentence for anotehr puppy or dog in a shelter right now.

Be responsible - enjoy your pets as pets, not as puppy factories. Spay and neuter - save a life.

Yes, but I'm not sure that you could call the dogs pedigrees afterwards as I'm not sure if this cross is registered as a breed with the Kennel Club

If you are breeding 2 pedigrees their off spring will no longer have the title of "pedigree". Although there are a million and one hybrid mixes of dogs none of them is recognized by the AKC.

It's really never okay to breed dogs, there are so many unwanted animals.
The two breeds can be bred but the lab genes are dominant so they'd probably look like labs.
Why would you want to dilute the pedigree lines by breeding down?

I do not really understand why someone would want to take two PEDIGREE dogs and produce a litter of MONGRELS, however pretty they may turn out!
