The check, once you deposited it into your bank account, went back to the irs' bank. Isn't there something else you can use to prove relationship?

They may not have the actual check on hand, although I think they are required to keep documents for a set period of time.
Regardless, your bank should be able to give you a photopy of the check that you deposited. Of course, they will charge you a nominal fee but it seems like you need it.
Just call your bank. Don't ask. Tell them you want a copy of the deposit made on (whatever date).
Good luck!

You can prove you filed a joint return by producing a tax return. The refund check is no more convincing.

Filing a joint return doesn't really prove that you are married - sometimes people file joint illegally. To prove marriage you'd need a marriage certificate or equivalent paperwork.

Do you mean you filed married? If so, just take a copy of your 1040's with you.

Nope, take your tax forms with you and if you filed jointly, your's and your wife's name will be on them. Legal document, should suffice.
