I have a co-worker that seems to have a family emerency every week. Could he be telling the truth or just don't want to work. Did this at his old job also.

Well, it's possible to have an emergency every week. It's far more likely he's either trying to get out of work, or has some kind of addiction problem.

agreed, it's less likely that he has a family emergency every week. dont get me wrong, i've had a string of bad luck in which i had emergencies 6 times over the course of 2 months and had to request time off for each, but if this is a recurring theme (past employment and current) then i'd assume that its less of an emergency and more of a laziness issue.
i once worked at a place where the manager wrote down the excuses of each worker that required time off and lo and hehold we had one guy who's grandmother died THREE times! and we had girls who amazingly had their periods twice a month....
if it's not affecting you then dont worry about it. if it is affecting your job performance then i'd say do something about it. talk to your manager....

it's possible. he may have a very sick relative, with cancer or something that needs constant support, but i think that your boss should be able to tell.
