I wrote this in my blog last night, and felt like asking if anyone else felt similarly here.

//How damaging a concept "heaven" can be. Not because of the opposing concept of a "hell", but in its own right. We see that terrorism is done in hopes of becoming a "martyr" and getting rewarded in Paradise. But I see damage done in the name of the Christian Heaven that I grew up on, too. I once read about a man whose wife didn't want him riding motorcycles, and his pastor persuaded him to stop by saying there would be motorcycles in heaven. I teared up and hoped for his sake the pastor was right.

Though I am Pagan and believe there's probably an afterworld of some kind, I don't know for sure. All of us can only guess. It breaks my heart to hear of people forsaking the things we know about for sure, the buffet of blessings given to us on Earth, for the gossamer hope of more and better in the Afterworld. (And if you don't have blessings, you can *make* them while you're here.)//

No worse than our society, about being beuitful, rich, famous.
We live in a society based on insicuritie and fear. Heaven and hell are concepts created to control us. Be good and kiss gods *** and your in. Dont and you burn. Look at our society always the carrot dangling.

I think you make excellent points, especially here

"It breaks my heart to hear of people forsaking the things we know about for sure, the buffet of blessings given to us on Earth, for the gossamer hope of more and better in the Afterworld."

Another problem I have with it is the eternal aspect of it, both Heaven and Hell. Why put us on this earth for a small finite period, just to have that small finite period determine where we go for all of time? I think it is petty to judge someone on such a momentary existence. I also think it would be Hell to be in the same unchanging place for eternity.

If we see 'heaven' as 'eternal reward', then yes. It's the engine behind martyrdom.

The obvious damage of elevating martyrdom is terrorism. But the quiet side is worse. The one that says Don't worry about how bad your life is here, just go with the flow and pray.

That philosophy is why the Roman Empire made Christianity the state religion. People prayed and accepted the status quo and those with power and money continued to exploit those with less.

And it's still going on today.

It's detrimental to the world. In their method of thinking, 'Who cares if we trash this world cause we'll be going to heaven after this life anyhow?'

So much time is wasted on preparing for an afterlife, that they never get to enjoy the one they have right now.

yes, think of it like high school. People backstab and gossip and cheat to get to the 'in crowd' while the victims are left to sit at their lunch tables alone feeling left out and hated.
