OMG that happened to me!!! Luckily though I started to wear my retainers as soon as the gap formed and then it closed again. I know hpe exciting it is to now have your braces removed but I really think you should follow your dentists advice and wear it at all times except when eating and playing sports. You'll notice the difference!

Youre not giving it a chance to work, wear it all the time like he says and the gap will go. If it hasnt gone next week when you go back you can honestly say you followed instructions but it hasnt worked. Then he can decide what to do next. Dont panic these things are easy fixed. I got my braces off 18 months ago and am stubborn about my retainer, i force myself to wear mine because i want to keep my teeth straight. Chill, it will be fine x

A gap isn't the end of the world, look at Madonna.
Braces and a retainer for a while are a better option, than having to have two extractions to make room on your jaw for the rest of your teeth.
Don't lie to your dentist about what you've been doing or rather not doing and follow his/her instructions this time.

Well, it's your own fault for screwing up. My brother didn't wear his retainer after he got his braces off. A little while after, he had to get braces AGAIN. Remember that.
