I read about this earlier (after another post). It had to do with the Mayan calendar and its predictions. I looked at NASA(who has a site dedicated to planetary alignments) and all I could find in the year 2012 was a special event, a transition, by Venus, which the Mayan's monitered closely.
"Transits of Venus across the disk of the Sun are among the rarest of planetary alignments. Indeed, only six such events have occurred since the invention of the telescope (1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874 and 1882). The next two transits of Venus will occur on 2004 June 08 and 2012 June 06."

I don't think there will be any major planetary alignment at that time. I also calculated the gravitational pull of a planetary alignment and and found it to be very low in comparison to other celestial bodies.
Here is the formula for calculating gravitational pull:
"The force between any two objects having masses M1 and M2 separated by a distance R is an attraction along the line joining the objects and has a magnitude
F = (G x M1 x M2) / (R x R)
G is the universal gravitational constant which has a value of 6.6732 x 10-11 newton-meters2/kg2 for all pairs of objects."
http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/ask_astro/answers/961029b.html
Here is a short summary of the tifal force pull exerted by different celestial bodies.
Moon 2.21
Sun 1.00
Venus 0.000113
Jupiter 0.0000131
Mars 0.0000023
Mercury 0.0000007
Saturn 0.0000005
Uranus 0.000000001
Neptune 0.000000002
Pluto 0.0000000000001

Remember, Mercury and Venus are closer to the Sun and, if aligned with the rest of the planets, would counteract their gravitational pull.
Here is a good site for calculating alignments.

I have heard that there will be a conjunction with the equator of the Milky way, and several other things.
"The date December 21st, 2012 A.D. (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count), represents an extremely close conjunction of the
Winter Solstice Sun with the crossing point of the Galactic Equator (Equator of the Milky Way) and the Ecliptic
(path of the Sun), what that ancient Maya recognized as the Sacred Tree. This is an event that has been coming to
resonance very slowly over thousands and thousands of years. It will come to resolution at exactly 11:11 am GMT."
It won't create any significant gravitational pul (the gravitational pull decreases with the square of the distance between the bodies).
Hope this helps. :)

The Sun, our moon, and the galactic equator will not align on Dec 21, 2012. Our Sun AND the Galactic equator NEVER actually align, relative to the Earth. On that date, the moon will be off by about 90° (the first quarter will have occurred the night before). The Sun, meanwhile, is about 6° off the Galactic Equator, and that "alignment" happens EVERY year. In practice, even if such an alignment were to occur, I would expect nothing more unusual than what happens during any new moon (ie spring tides). The gravitational influence of other stars and/or other planets and/or the galactic core is MINUSCULE (as in fractions of a percent best expressed via scientifc notation) compared to that of the Moon and the Sun.

There is no rare astronomical event in 2012. There is no "planetary alignment" in 2012. You can use the 1st source to plot the positions of the planets on any date and you will see that there is no rare alignment. It isn't rocket science.
This 2012 nonsense is just as stupid as the Jupiter Effect nonsense of 1982. See the 2nd source.

There have been planetary alignments before without catastrophic changes. The Voyager probes used one such alignment to make their study of the solar system easier.
So, no. I don't believe that a planetary alignment will cause catastrophic changes to Earth.

There are subtle changes in the Earth when there is planetary alignment. But, catstrophic? The moon gives catastophic subtle changes. Depending on location. And, that is on a non-stop constant basis.
We just have to wait and see.

I wonder why people are accepting the Mayan Calender as the highest authority of astronomy? I wish I still gambled, I could win a lot of money by betting against the "catastrophe".

I don't believe it. I don't think that NASA does either. Maybe you should ask those in your church when they think these changes will happen. After all, they do seem to have all the answers.

I think its very possible. Has there ever been a time where the planets line up before? Only God knows
If I were you, I'd have my life firmly held in God's hands, by accepting Jesus.

that should give you an answer. It goes into detail, but I'm too lazy right now to retype the important stuff.
