Bring your veggie friend, and invite them to bring a dish. Many things that are eaten at barbecues are vegetarian options - baked beans, potato salad, pasta salad, fruit and veggies - ask them to bring a dish to share that is also veggie. Veggie kabobs (cherry tomatos, bell peppers, onion, and pineapple) are a big hit with meat eaters and vegetarians alike. That way, there is at least one thing they will be able to eat. Plus- this isn't about the food, it's about the companionship, right?

If you know the people well see what they will have. Normally at a cookout you have veggies and salads so it is fine. You can just check how much food they plan on having. Ask them if it is alright that you bring someone and mention they are vegetarian. Vegetarians usually have no problem bringing a veggie burger to throw on the grill because they are used to it. Bringing a dish is also a polite guest thing to do and a great way to let your vegetarian friend have more to eat! But don't be afraid to bring a veggie burger if contacting the family isn't something you are comfortable doing. Chances are they will be fine and love to accomodate a new friend! Good luck!

One thing I've learned as a vegan is that it's almost always best to bring your own food to parties, just in case. Definitely make something and bring enough to share with everyone. You might want to call up ahead of time and let them know what you're bringing. At a cookout, something like a pasta salad, for example, is easily made vegetarian and is usually appreciated by a wide range of people.
Doing this when I get invited to cookouts and gatherings means the hosts are never pressured or inconvenienced by my special dietary needs -- I so hate to be a bother that way.

We are Jewish, so we often have this issue when going to a group dinner. At a cookout, we always bring our own meat to make sure we have Kosher meat. Have your vegetarian friend bring along her/his own tofu burgers, and make sure the hostess knows that she/he is a vegetarian so she can make side dishes that your friend will eat.

Take some Boca burgers. Anything else at a cookout can be eaten by a vegetarian.

I dont see why you shouldn't bring your companion, just be sure that there is food that they would be able to eat. I'd call ahead and express my concerns with the family and make sure that there is vegetarian dishes available.

You should call your family and ask them to pick up a box of Boca burgers. If there are other vegetarian friendly dishes there, Your companion will be all set.

You should definately take your friend and make sure there is something available to put on their plate.
The cookout is more about the socializing than the food, I would think.

Invite the friend and tell them they will have to bring their own food they are usually use to it. Or they can just eat the salads or you can bring something for them.
The food is only part of the occassion the gathering and friendship is the main part.
