Ask him to help you with something like operating a machine or if he can show you some weight lifting techniques then strike up a conversation from there.

say "Hi, you seem to work out a lot, can you tell me any good exercises to do with free weights?" Then introduce yourself.. It doesn't matter that you don't care to learn but at least you'll get his name and your talking. Even if it goes no where you can call him by first name and say hi ______ ! next time you see him at the gym

Complement him on how much weight he is lifting(a lot of guy's are unjustly insecure about that, strike up a conversation with him.

you dont I hate when people bother me at the Gym. Also dont women always complain about guys looking at them while they work out or hitting on them. Guess what we dont like it either
