Basically anything that you may have been arrested and fingerprinted for would show up on an FBI background check. A visa overstay and any detention would warrant a look. If you are filling out a form for the background check, it would be wise to include anything that you think might be there. Otherwise, it will appear that you are trying to hide something. It is much easier to explain the truth than a lie.

Get a No Cost Background Check Scan at https://bitly.im/aNTRY
Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.
You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

Let me first state that I am not 100% on this, but I say yes. You don't mention what kind of job it is, but it must be a position of some prestige or there are security concerns. Unless this employer has a no tolerance policy, the fact that this transgression is 40 years old would be taken into consideration. I'm sure they'd want to know the circumstances of the AWOL. It would be what happened afterwards that would of concern. Anything on record that establishes a pattern of someone who is not trustworthy. I spent 3 years active duty in the US Army and it's been my experience that they remember everything. Did you get an honorable discharge? Any other would not work in your favor. Good luck, dude, I hope it goes your way.
