unfortunatly its not a simple as saying the butter side is heavier as most people have. Its actually to do with the way humans have evolved and the size we are. We are the size we are because if we were any taller(over 10 feet) every time we fell over we would crack our heads open. If we were any smaller our bodies wouldnt be practial with not enough space to hold everything in. so because we are always less than ten feet tall the tables we eat from are always about the same height. this height is just enough for a piece of toast to rotate half a spin before hitting the floor, hence it always lands butter side down.

All of the above answers are wrong, although you would think it makes sense, the reason for this is, that all tables are roughly the same height of the floor and when the bread falls it only has enough time to rotate a half turn therefore if the table is double the height the bread would rotate 1 full turn and land butter side up, i saw this theory on How 2 the CITV programme, thanks

i would assume it is because the butter weighs down that particular side. As the bread falls, the weight shifts to the heavier side so therefore the butter side lands flat.

because the height from where you drop it from is only tall enough to let it flip over once when it falls. If you drop it from a higher place it will mostly land butter side up.

You need to go at this by experiment.

Try buttering both sides.

Judging by the answers above, it should land on it's edge.

It's heavier on that side because of the added butter :-)

It was on MythBuster's. Wooo. they proved that it nearly always lands on the buttered side (i think)

i think they denounced that it was because that side was heavier.

That answer is very simple, the buttered side is heavier.
