We adopted a 1 year old Min Pin/Doxen about 2 months ago. House training him has been extremely difficult. During the day and evening when we are home he is fine and will go outside to do his business. However in the morning if we are still in bed he will go down stairs and poop or pee right in front of the laundry room.
We have done everything we can think of. From punishing him but sticking his nose in it and putting him out side to cleaning the carpets to get the smell out.
We have another dog who is three and we had no problem training her. They have a doggie door to go in and out of the as they please and he knows its there, he uses it all the time. We are lost for what to do can anyone help!?

Is it ALWAYS the same spot.. Always in front of the laundry room?? I had one who thought that if we weren't up.. that I wanted her to pee in the kitchen by the stove.. Not sure why she chose that spot.. But every single morning she would wake up and head for this spot.. So I put a box there.. I figured block the spot.. you like that spot so well, then I am taking it back ... It worked.. She never ever peed there again.. and never would and wouldn't even consider going in the house.. I left the spot blocked for a couple of weeks and once she was out of the habit, it was done.. For some reason, she thought it was the spot to use.. Once the habit was broken, she started asking to go outside ..

If this doesn't work you could always crate the dog at night so that you get up and take him out and he has no chance to go to that spot.

I have crate trained my puppy, so I don't wake up to accidents in the mornings, but I finally broke down and put a puppy training pad down in the kitchen. She's confined to the kitchen for about 8 hours a day while I work, and she just can't hold it that long. Maybe you could put one in front of the laundry room. At least it makes clean up easier.

i'm surprised he wasn't trained already seeing that he's a yr old. rubbing his nose in it won't do any good. they have a short memory for things like that. just like kids. you could try crating him when you aren't home or when you're asleep. dogs don't usually like to go where they live. the other thing is setting your alarm and make sure you get up earlier. you'll have to get him set to your schedule but it will take a bit of time. it could be that he did this with his previous owner so he's used to it. good luck.

I am having the same damn problem with my dog. One peice of advice: having a doggy door and allowing them to go outside on their own isn't "training" them.
