I'm looking for a SUV that is reliable and I've heard good things about the 4Runner. Looking at a 1996 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 (3.4L V6 FI DOHC 24V / REAR WHEEL DRIVE) with listed price of $5995.00. 146,000 miles. Per Carfax report, no accidents/recalls, 1 owner. Went to look at it and looks great, interior looks brand new (leather, sunroof, new radio with faceplate that is removable). Outside is also nice (tinted, has front grill guard also). Is this good mileage for the price? I am negotiating and dealer is willing to go down to $4000 with 1000 down payment. I'm traumatized from a previous bad car deal so any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

If you are going finance the car do not buy the car unless you have 3% or lower APR. The car will be worthless by the time you pay it off. Or you are thinking of keeping this car for another 5 years. Only buy the car if you are paying cash and can get it for $4000. Once a car goes over 120000 miles, Kelly Blue Book means nothing. Also, you will probably have to spend a lot of money maintaining the car when it get this old and a lot of miles.

first, clean the carb and replace the filter. Make sure the pump is pumping gas and the carb fills up. you can see if it is a gas problem by using a very light amount of starting fluid to see if it will hit. If it doesn't check the fire. Just because you see fire doesn't mean there is enough. The spark needs to be a strong blue in color as the weaker yellow or white spark is not enough to start your car. Also check the ballast resister as all old Dodge's have them and they are usually the cause of a mopar not to start. Those engines are also notorious for the distributor to go bad. Check the timing to make sure it is firing when it should. No matter how good the spark is, it has to spark when the cylinder is just past TDC (top dead center) in order for the ignition of the compressed gas in the cylinder to work right. Hope this helps, Craig

this is a tough question to address without seeing the vehicle in person. the 4runners, particularly that series are great vehicles. you are however looking at buying a 2wd suv that has 146k miles on it. is it worth four thousand dollars, i believe so, and obviously you see the value in the car. things you want to make sure you do look at, on the deal side of it, just use your common sense and take a step back once all of the numbers are finalized and make sure they add up. the most common mistake is taking someones word for it and not looking for yourself. and if you at any point feel like you are being taken advantage of, just get up and walk out, you are not "trapped" until you have taken delivery of the vehicle. best of luck.

Expect repairs with a car that has 145K on it. Also, the car is 11 years old.

If you like the SUV then get it. One word of caution, have it inspected by a mechanic that you trust. He should be able to give you a sense of what the car may need in the future. good luck.
