to not run away?? I have a 2 yr old lab and he wants to dart out the door, run, and not look back. I see so many labs in the neighborhood that hang out, out front of their house without leaving. My dog is an inside animal and does get to go on walks everyone now and then-

walk him more often and socialize him. the only way to stop this is practice. use small training treats and teach him to stay. also, don't let him near the door when someone comes in or out. let the people come to him.

First off, your dog needs WAY more exercise!!! Labs are not meant to lay around in the house. My 7 month lab puppy gets 2 30-60 minute walks a day, plays all day in the back yard with our other dog, and goes to the dog park about an hour and still has more energy. if you are not up for such a long walk then try riding your bike while the dog runs with you, that should tire him out faster. Also, if you have not done basic training (or obedience classes) you should do that. Once your dog knows how to "stay" and "come" you won't have to worry about him running off. Good luck!

A lab is a working dog and he sounds very bored. This is an animal that should be taken on a long walk every day or taken to a dog park to release some energy. Also, he sounds like he needs basic training. Courses are held at petsmart for a reasonable costs and are very effective. They will be able to teach you the commands that he will follow and ways to use them. When he runs, you chase him and this is great fun.

If he is 2 then somewhere along the line the dog was taught that running way was the thing to do. Meaning if the dog got punished by the time he got back.. Well you taught him need needs to run faster. I suggest getting a book on training or take him to obedience school, because training isn't something that you just teach a dog then they know they have to do it every time, it has to be done over time and being consistent each and every time the same way.. for the rest of the dogs life and then you have to make sure you reinforce the training you have given the dog.

A 2 year old lab has alot of energy, he needs to have good exercise daily. Walks now and then is not enough. To stop him running off, you need to retrain his obedience skills. Don't wait till your door is open before commanding he returns. Take him in your garden (if enclosed) if not indoors and train him to come to you. Use short commands ie Name of Dog and then say firmly here. Each time he comes to you make a great fuss of him and give a small treat. You need to have patience and ensure he is a safe distance when you have to open your door. Labs are clever dogs so hopefully he will not take long to retrain. Best of Luck

food, bring doggie treats with you, get your dog used to coming back to you to get a treat, then give them a treat some of the time, and always praise them when they do come back, treat or not.
