I am cooking dinner tonight for my family, and I need advice on what to serve on the side. I am fixing chicken pot pie and thought I would have gouda cheese grits as one side (that is why I only want Southerners to answer this-- you understand the idea of serving cheese grits with dinner!). Should I also fix a green, such as a salad? Or do you think there are enough veggies in the pot pie already. Also, would cheese grits (or mashed potatoes) be too much starch too serve along with the crusty pot pie? Thanks so much for your help!

I am from Mississippi :) Definitely make a salad and have some Ranch...and there is never enough starch for us Southerners...yum yum.

Hello,
this particular southern grits-loving person would forgo the grits and just do a green salad. Personally, I think if you have a nice thick, flaky crust on the pot pie and potatoes in the pie, that's enough starch. My favorite things to eat with cheese grits are.... shrimp and grits, sausage and eggs, grillades, fried fish, or any type of meat that has gravy or sauce. However, I would not turn down cheese grits if offered them with any meal! I just don't think they're necessary with this particular one.

Well how southern do you want to get?:)
Southern dish would imply a cooked green (collards, mustard, or turnip greens) For for northerners sot a popular choice. I would steer away from a heavy starch (such as cheese grits) and go with rice dish (dirty rice, black beans and rice or even a jambalaya rice base) . Chicken pot pie with a thickened gravy in it would go great with rice. Then would try (although not technically a southern dish) but asparagus with a garlic olive oil blend. OR french cut green bean,s, or plain cut green beans sauteed in arlic and olive oil (or butter to really push the southern theme.) And wouldn't hurt to add corn bread to sop up that delicious pot pie gravy. Hope this helps..have a great dinner either way...

A salad is fine to start with..but may I suggest rice to go with the pot pie instead- then your kids can mix the veggies and rice and pretend to LIKE the veggied :P That and the juices from the pie will flavor the rice and wont compete with the flavor like the cheese grits might ;) Have a great day and happy cooking!

You can never go wrong with veggies. Like kale and bacon, or just a green salad. I think that sounds a great dinner. (My husband's southern and he does this a lot.)

A salad would be perfect to even out the heaviness of the other dishes, so serve it all up YUMMY!

It would taste good together, we don't always have to have a perfect balance...I would maybe serve a green vegetable as well, maybe steamed broccoli or green beans, something like that...some roughage! Have a nice meal!!!
