If you don't have any ideas at all, I'd recommend going to the bridal salons in your area. At the very least they will have some massive books for you to go through so you can at least have some opinion on what style you like and don't like.
As far as the designers go that depends on your bridesmaids more than anything else. For example I love Jessica McClintock-- however she uses mostly asian models when showing her dresses. Therefore, her busts aren't made with much excess and don't cover a curvy woman well at all. Great for me--however horrible for my bridesmaids. Ask at the salons based on how your bridesmaids look--which designers they recommend. Each dress I picked out I quickly changed my mind once I saw it on my bridesmaids.
Looking at the Davids Bridal website is great for ideas as well. Are you having a formal wedding or informal? perhaps tea length dresses? something more form fitting or ballgown? Do you have any idea about your wedding colors? How much do you want your bridesmaids to pay--less than $100, less than $200, a designer original couture gown? There are literally hundreds upon thousands of dresses and you have to limit it somewhat ahead of time or you'll never be able to pick just one.

I agree -- Dessy is very cute.
But I recommend ordering them through www.houseofbrides.com -- you will save about 40%.
They have a ton of options -- they are a bridal shop that also sells through the internet.
I ordered my wedding dress through this site (saved $500) and had no problems with getting it shipped to me on time, came as I ordered it (including a custom hem)...
I would recommend them.
Have fun!
PS. I did little black dresses for my "bridesmaids" -- the pictures looked great and they all have dresses they can wear again (4 of them already have worn them again for another event). Just something to keep in mind -- being a bridesmaid can get really expensive... little black dresses breed less frustration and resentment

I like the dresses by B2 (jasminebridal.com). They are affordable, come in a lot of different colors and are really cute. They offer a lot of dresses that your bridesmaids would be able to wear again.

Try david's bridal website. you get to mix and match, choose your bridesmaids, groomsen, flower girl, etc. You get to see how your wedding party will look. I recommend it. You'll be very pleased.

J.Crew has really simple and pretty dresses. When I get married, I'm thinking simple blue strapless dresses. That way they won't over-do the bride :)

Dessy is great, but their other line, After Six, is more affordable. Either can be purchased at online vendors such as http://www.houseofbrides.com

These two sites are the best I've seen so far in pricing and they both have many styles and colors to choose from. http://www.bridalonlinestore.com and http://www.justthebeginnings.com
