to use someone's design for a tattoo without their permission? i found a drawing online that i love. it isn't something some drew for use as a tattoo but i'd love to use it. i have tried getting in touch with the artist, but no answer.

oh it does mean something to me. i've wanted something like this for years, but i cant' draw and no one i know can either. and this design says almost exactly what i want. if i could draw or find someone who could do it exactly like i want, i would, but this would work great too. thanks for the answers so far

oh and for it looking good in 30 years, i'd have to change the colors for that lol. it'd be my 3rd tat, or 4th depending on if i can get my other idea on paper exactly first.

It should be OK to use a design that you find. You're using the design for your personal use, not selling it or using it for any commercial purpose. Do remember though that a good tattooist is also an artist. He/she can be given the design as a representation of what you would like and to use as inspiration, but he/she needs to be given the freedom to put himself/herself into the work as well.

I don't know about ethical, but it sure is practical. I'm sure everyone that has a Tazmanian Devil tattoo didn't get permission from Warner Bros. Go ahead and use the design - if the artist ever sees it, they would most likely be flattered. Its not like you are using the image as a logo for your company that the artist would be entitled to royalties for. You are wearing their art on your skin forever - what a compliment. Good luck.

Tattooing in one form or another has existed for thousands of years. It is actually fairly common to "copy" someone else's design. Many groups of friends (or gang members, or fellow tribesmen, or fraternity brothers, etc...) will deliberately get the same or similar tattooes so that they can be identified as belonging to the same group.
I do agree that you should try to contact the artists first, as all art can be very personal, but there should be no problem. Most artists would feel honored that you liked the design enough to want it on your body.

using someone's art isn't something that i would have a problem with. some people do feel better about getting an artist's permission first but i would be more concentrated on finding an artist that can do the piece of art justice so you'll have a great rendition or tribute to the piece of art.

you can use it .. or bring the picture of it to an artist and have them change it a bit to exactly what you want.. if it is a little different there should be no prob... or just keep trying to get in touch with the person .. they maybe very busy and havent had a chance to get back to you .. or they may be so famous they get to much mail and dont read half of it

It's good that you tried to get in touch with the artist. But in the end, there's nothing against it. People have been using copyrighted characters, artwork, logos, etc. pretty much since tattoos began.

I dont think it would be original. Do you have friends that can draw or do you have someone in your family that you could dedicate the tattoo to-this would have meaning.

well I'm sure they won't find you & sue you if you use it lol. How would they know that you used it in the 1st place??? I say just do it. If you really like it, go for it.

you could get a really good tatoo artist to re-draw it to your liking.

It's not okay. Tattoos are supposed to mean something to YOU and be ORIGINAL. Try finding another design. It's just...wrong to do that.
