There are many factors influencing the amount of pain involved in getting tattooed. The size and placement of the tattoo are considerations, as well as who is doing the tattooing. The larger the piece of artwork you want, the more hours you will spend in the chair, of course resulting in more pain. Where you will place your tattoo on your body will also affect the amount of discomfort. The outside of your upper arm is really not all that painful, but the ribs are something else. Each tattoo artist has their own technique for their craft. Some are very heavy handed, but only go over each line once or twice. Some have a light hand, but go over each line a million times. I have yet to find one that has a light hand and only goes over each line a few times - I'll let ya know. Also, remember that the size and placement of the tattoo will have an affect on the amount of pain you are in during the healing process. The tattoo on my arm was easy to keep clean and free from irritation, however, the tattoos on my feet and in my bikini area were much harder to heal. These areas do not get as much air and are subject to clothing & shoes rubbing on them. I hope I helped and didn't confuse you too much. All tattoos are well worth the pain - it does not hurt everyday for the rest of your life - so suck it up and get inked!!!! Good luck!

It depends where you get it because certain areas are more sensitive and a bone can make things uncomfortable. But overall, it isn't bad at all. I would describe the sensation as heating a piece of metal to a temperature that is just a little too hot and then holding it to your skin. It is a slight annoyance more than anything. And the person who said there is a good chance of getting the HIV is a moron, the only way that is possible is if you go to a sleazy artist who is breaking the law and not using clean needles

I have one that's about 4"X5". It took him about 1 1/2 hours. It didn't really hurt that much for the first 45 minutes. But after repeated needle jabs in the same place, it did start to hurt a lot and I wanted it to be over. It was NOT as bad as childbirth though. :-)

It all depends on the area you plan to tattoo. Some places are more sensitive than others. Also depends on the size of the tattoo and how much of a wuss you are.

Paid is relative... what you should be asking yourself is "How serious am I about a PERMANENT marking on my body?" Tats are a lifelong commitment. The paid in only for 45 minutes.. the tat is for life. I have three myself.. they all hurt, but obviously not enough for me to not get another, so that should say something. But getting them removed is painful and expensive.. so just make sure it's what you want.

some spots don't hurt more than a mild sunburn, some spots, like on the inside of your bicep hurt like all get out. Any area that is mostly skin over bone hurts too. Like back of the hand, foot etc. Remember, "no pain, no stain"!!

Take a piece of sandpaper and rub it where you plan to get the tattoo, feels pretty much like that.

The pain isn't that bad. When I got mine, I was told it felt like cat nails on a sunburn.

It is like a sewing machine jabbing in and out of the drawn outline of the tattoo. If you are pain sensitive, I would not recommend it at all.
