My cousin sits for mine, too! They like him, and while they miss us I know, it's only 2 weeks. Make sure cousin plays with them and stays to do more than just throw out food and change litter.
My cousin will be staying here, so they don't have to change their home, which is less scary than going someplace else.
I also like this method because somebody lives in the house, it doesn't look empty for burglars. I think it's so much better to do this than to use a boarding place. My cousin is kind to them and loves them, so they are still getting their need met.
Enjoy the vacation!

Yes they do get sad and can have anxiety also.
If you provide all the food for your cousin that your cat will need then you'll know that he'll be well fed. Make sure you tell your cousin to please give him attention and lots of love while your away, and your cousin and Kitty will have a easy time of the separation while your away. Also provide a few personal favorite items for him to take a long, like a familiar blanket or toys, even his own personal feeding dishes. If your cousins does as you ask then I don't think you'll have any problems.
Good luck

You absolutely cannot leave a cat home alone for 3 weeks! You set out a glass of water then I want you to drink it 2 weeks from now. Then I want you to poo in the toilet but don't flush it for a week. Don't both of those sound icky? Well that's what you are expecting your cat to do. Cats should be given a fresh bowl of water every day! Nobody scooping the litter box for 3 weeks is just nasty and a smell you don't want to come home to and the cat doesn't want to live with either. It is not necessary for anyone to play with your cat or pet it. It is perfectly okay if it runs and hides. What you want is someone to come and make sure it is safe and that it gets fed and fresh water put out and the litter box scooped. Your options are: 1. Call your vet and ask if any of the vet techs cat sit and if they do, hire them to come to your home once a day to feed and scoop. 2. If they don't, ask the vet about boarding your cat there. Or ask them if they know anyone who cat sits because they may other clients who do. 3. Call the SPCA and ask if they can recommend cat sitters, quite often they know very trust worthy people. You want a bonded cat sitter. 4. You should set up a timer on a couple lamps in your home to turn on at dusk and turn off around 11:00 or 12:00 bedtime. Plug in some night lights that turn themselves on and off. You want the home atmosphere to remain as normal as possible. Do not hire a neighbor kid to do it! They are unreliable and will not show up for days. Don't pay your sitter until you come home. Leave all phone numbers where you can be reached posted on the refrig. along with vets phone number and a permission note for the sitter to take the cat to the vet if it is sick. Notify your vet you will be gone (if they don't have it boarded with them) and how to reach you and who might bring the cat in if there is an emergency. You cannot put out canned food for the cat at all! It's kibble and water only if you leave your cat behind unattended and you have no clue how much water. What if the cat plays and knocks over the water and there is no water for 2 or 3 weeks? You need at least two food and water stations located in different parts of the home and you need two extra litter boxes set up minimum. This is not a good thing to leave a cat alone for that length of time. Board it or get a pet sitter!

Yes they do to some extent. Sounds like your baby has an outgoing personality though, so she/he will probably adjust if the cousin gives her extra attention and care. Make sure she/he has some of it's favorite treats. Expect probably a little cold shoulder when you get back, but they forgive and forget. I have 30 cats and I have to leave them every now and then... some will act out (pee on something ususally), some give me the cold shoulder for a few days, and some won't leave me alone for 2 seconds afraid I'll leave again, but all go back to normal a few days after I return. I have aslo had to "foster care" out some of mine before.... take them to someone. Don't let them let her outside....she/he may com looking for you! After you get home keep them inside for a few days and within a week all will be fine and forgiven! Some do get sad, but if your cousin gives them the extra love and attention she/he will be ok!

Yes cats get sad. Cats have emotions too. Your cat will probably miss you a lot and may even get a little depressed, but if your friend gives him lots of attention he should be fine.

Yes, but he'll be OK, especially when you get back. Make sure he can't get away from your cousin's house, he may try to go away to find your house or you, so make sure he doesn't get out.
