I'm goings down to Canberra with a few friends in spring (for the first time in years).

Last time we did a coach tour with my classmates & we went past a few embassies near parliament house. Thats when i took 2 photos of the American & PNG embassy.

I was wondering is to okay to take photos of Canberra embassies or do i have to ask security or staff before hand

Yes. Usually it is fine and they will not bother you. However, some embassies are going to be more troublesome than others. I know of someone who was followed home after taking several photos of the Embassy of Israel but they explained it and all was good. Lots of tourists take photos so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

It is OK to take photos as long as you are not of Middle eastern appearance or have a beard and as long as you don't give unused SIM cards to friends or relatives. If the Federal Police decide there is the faintest possible suspicion you might be a terrorist or you might know a terrorist or you might be distantly related to someone who might possibly know the great aunt of a terrorist, that's it! It's the Gulag for you with no hope of release ever.

There is no reason not to take photos of embassies. If anyone asks tell them you have an interest in architecture. Don't tell them you are selling the pictures on ebay to the highest bidder.
