they think they are enlightened and therefore know better.

Ok, if you think that the Pope's comment was misquoted, what part was misquoted and what did he really say? And I am an Evangelical that does not hate Catholics or any people that practice a different religion- however I do love them enough to want them to know the true Christ that I know. We are saved solely by the blood of Christ. What is so hateful about wanting others to have a personal relationship with the living God? But you all choose not too, that is your choice, and I am not responsible for that.

Regarding part 1: Its because they have been (wrongfully) led to believe that Catholics are not Christians. Anti-Catholicism is deeplty rooted in the American psychi. Just remember who founded the colonies - English protestants only a century after Henry The 8th murdered hundreds of Catholic bishops and stole all of our church buildings.
Regarding part 2, there are LOTS of stories. Read the conversion stories of Tim Staples, Scott Hahn, Rosalind Moss, and an army of others. In fact, there is a whole organization dedicated to converts: "The Coming Home Network": http://www.chnetwork.org/
Regarding the pope: He was not misquoted. His words were just misunderstood (as usual).

What I don't understand is how so many evangelicals can actually believe that Catholics are not Christians. Moreover, when we try to correct this misapprehension, they tell us that, no matter what we say to the contrary, we really aren't Christians. Excuse me? What do any of them know about our Faith and our relationship with God? They only know what their anti-Catholic pastors and authors have told them.
For example, AdoreHim automatically assumes that we have no idea who Christ is and neither have nor want a relationship with Him. Nothing could be further from the truth! Evangelical protestantism is really big on salvation by faith and a personal relationship with Jesus. News Flash: Catholics have all that! The difference is that we have *more* than that. We don't practice Cafeteria Christianity; we honor *all* the traditions and tenets of our common Christian faith whether they are easy and popular or not.
So to our evangelical brothers and sisters, I beseech you to actually listen to Catholics when you ask your questions about our Faith. Don't automatically assume that we're idolators (we're not) or Mary-worshippers (not that either) or that we don't care about Christ (absolutely not true) just because some "learned" protestant minister or author has said these things about us. Please try to set aside their hatred and prejudice and actually try to understand *us*, rather than what you think we are.

Evangelicals Christians will not rest until all are forced to convert to their religion as well as not rest until this country is a Theocracy. According to a majority of them all books with the exception of the bible should be burnt. Just look at how they react to all the Harry Potter books

I don't believe the pope was misquoted,
and I don't believe Evangelicals to be anti-Christian/Catholics
So I guess I have no answer to your question

I am not sure if they are, but if so, they are in the wrong. We are to love our fellow man, unconditionally.

Hateful? Not this Christian.
I pay attention to doctrine.
I doubt the pope was misquoted though.
