... so that you can then rape him and get pregnant - and give birth to a child conceived in both rape and incest. explain that, cause i can't. (this is a genuine question from someone who knows a LOT about the bible, and christianity)

note: cowards and fools who take cheap shots, and then block all means of contact lest someone actually follow up and respond to their accusation are just a waste of space here. to suffer these clowns is tiresome. taco, i have no doubt my biblical knowledge surpasses yours. and perhaps several of the other christians that frequent r&s. its like i can see right through your ears. don't mock jesus by claiming he's your savior and that you follow his example as much as possible and then spew ignorance and judgement.
kudos to the person who said not to get caught up on details and stuff but to look at the bible in a big picture kind of way.... i really did laugh out loud. cheers. prize for you later. no one picks and chooses scripture to fit their own agenda like a bible thumper. and no, not all christians are brainwashed, cookie cutter people, just some. you know who you are. or do you?

You're exactly correct.
The Bible records even failures like these. It lays it out there, so all can see.
Part of what we can learn from all this, is to see the depths to which a family can sink after being influenced by the people around them. Compare Lot before, during, and after.
See also the results of this sin...the children born became sinful nations which we find showing up later in scripture.
There is, you MUST know this, much more than meets the eye.

If you know a lot about the Bible, then you should realize that it doesn't condone everything it reports. The incident with Lot and his daughters that you've mentioned is one of those occasions. OF COURSE it was a sin to do what they did, but the Bible presents it to show you what the origins of the Moabites and Ammonites were. One of Jesus' own ancestors was a Moabite (Ruth). Demonstrates how God can use man and his depravity for His good purposes towards them!

lol, i don't have the answer for you, but will say this-if you get hung up on little insignificant details like that, then you have no time to see the bigger picture and learn about what jesus taught-which is to love others as yourself and help those in desparate situations. christians always get hung up on silly debates like gays in the church (which i personally have no problem with), that we forget the message of jesus-accept everyone regardless of sexual preference, social status, age race or gender. remember, in the bible, jesus also appeared to the women first when he rose from the dead and he talked to and helped out a samaritan woman (which in those times you just did not do). jesus lived his life despite what society at that time said and he helped those trapped within its standards and rules. mainly women and the poor in riches and in spirit. i am not belittling your question in any way, but things were different back in those times and we just need to accept it. it's a really good question.

Yep, as filled in by some of the posters above, the Chosen People were one big batch of sinners. That is why God had Jerusalem destroyed and the Jews taken off as slaves repeatedly. The Chosen People kept screwing up.

It is a sin. The Bible never said it wasn't sin. There are many accounts of sinners in the Bible. David had a man killed. His son killed a half brother. One of his sons raped a half sister. Saul went to a witch for advice. Saul persecuted Christians.
I think one of the things that speaks to the truth of the Bi8ble is that it never omits or exuses sin.

It is a sin all the way around -- today.
Back then it was the way Lot's daughters could "preserve our father's seed."
Pretty scandalous today, and sinful, but remember back then: women were chattle, things that men owned. Genesis underscores the fact that Lot was drunk when his daughters raped him, so to underscore his "innocence" in all this.
If a man (Lot) had sinned, it would've been terrible. But lowly women... their sins didn't matter much unless they were sexually unfaithful to their husbands; not preserving his seed carefully enough.

of course it is a sin and they paid for their actions as we all must. murder is a sin also ...the bible tells of many such human errors that occur when ppl do not trust God and take matters into their own hands. being christian has nothing to do with it, being human does.
these are cautionary tales in the bible that are meant to help us avoid sin, if possible.

The Bible doesn't approve of this action -- it only reports that it happened.
When a news reporter covers a crime story, he/she is not saying that he/she approves of the crime or thinks it was a good thing. He/She is simply telling us what happened.
Apply the same to the Bible and the story you mention.
