I need to find a good bird dog that can hunt upland birds and waterfowl.

German Shorthaired Pointers, German Wirehaired Pointers, Vizsulas, Spinone, Pudel Pointer, Weimeraner, Brittany,Small munsterlander, Large Munsterlander,Wirehaired Pointing Griffon are some versatile hunting dog breeds.

My first choice would be the German Shorthaired Pointer, followed by the Viszla, German Wirehair and Weimaraner. All are lumped into the category of "continental hunting breeds" and all were developed along similar lines to achieve the goal of an all purpose hunting dog, fur or feather, water or land. If you intend to hunt, be sure your dog comes from working lines.

You're looking at the continental gundogs, like the german pointers (German Shorthair, Wirehair and Longhair), the Viszla, Weimaraner, Pudelpointer and (I believe) the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. I'm sure there are others, these are just the ones that come to mind at the moment.

Go to www.AKC.org, select breeds and then select breeds by group & then sporting. Clicking on a picture takes you to the info page for that breed & tells you a lot about the breed.
If you like what you have read about a particular breed,there is a link on the left that will take you to the National Club. You will find a ton of information there.

I'd say a German Shorthaired Pointer or a Weimaraner. I have a Weimaraner pup (5 months old) and he's already very interested in the birds.
