You don't do your work, you don't get rehired, and that's the way many government jobs are done these days, its a sort of serial employment contracts with limits.
Lazy people are lazy, they are in all businesses, people who are capable and go getters will be that way no matter what field they are in or who hires them.
There is personal pride in doing a good job, whether or not an individual has that pride is the determining factor.
If your daddy owns the company you work for you also aren't going to get fired, that's either going to make you careless or make you work really hard to impress the old man. Its an individual thing.

No, the internal paperwork and bureaucracy of government jobs burn employees out. For every one form they file on your behalf, ten more have to be filed within their own organizations. They spend so much time doing what is internally required by their agencies, that they have limited time and energy to help their real customers, the citizens and taxpayers. In order for government employees to have their grievances heard and addressed with their respective managers, most have to work through government employee union stewards, which is also a time consuming and tedious process. They can't just go to their bosses and say "I'm unhappy about this. Can we talk about it?". In short, they aren't lazy, but more often have their hands tied by their own organizations.

Depends on what type of government job. I work for a municipality as the HR director. We do fire poor workers. We don't hesitate.
I have a friend who works for the VA hospital -- lots of bad employees there, and all of them are still there.
I won't even talk about the postal service ....

Sometimes. - I was shocked to discover when working for the Govt. that people cannot be fired for sheer incompetence. The only thing they can be fired for is doing something illegal. Some people, like myself, have a strong work ethic anyway and are proud of their public service. But there are a lot of people coasting on a govet. job who would have been fired already in the publec sector.

my father worked for the federal government for 30 years and I've worked for the county government for almost 30 years. I've seen people get fired and so did he. it's not hard to get fired at all.

Let me tell you something about Government workers. I work for an elected official and we work "at will" this means you can be termnated for no reason and you have no recourse what-so ever. It's lika adictatorship right here in Texas.

i work in a government job, you are right it is hard to get fired, but what you do not know is if you do a bad job your contract will not get renewed and you only have 2-3 year contracts. and you are aways graded and if you really mess up big brother is not afraid to take your money.

Yes, this is true. When working for the VA Hospital they don't fire anyone. They just promote them.

I would love to have a government job because they do nothing. Can't get a straight answer if your life depended on it.
Wouldn't you stay at a job which required you to do nothing but give the people a pain in the ----.
